I'm required to buy an atlas before orientation and I would like a good trucking atlas. Does walmart sell them? Also, I was going to bring a large suitcase and a carry-on bag, but I was told that there is very limited space in the trucks. It measures 3' x 2' x 1'.

Thanks.

Huh? Uh, that's large?? smile.gif All in the eyes of the beholder heh? Joking. I have read duffel bags are a little easier to wrangle.

To get the Rand-McNally truckers atlas stop by a Truck Stop. They are usually less expensive there (believe it or not).

Take a little as possible. My son took on 3/4 filled duffle bag and one shoulder/laptop bag.

Thanks, I'll keep it minimal.

I personally think that's fine. If you were my student I wouldn't have a problem, but I would tell you to keep it on the edge of your bed because there's simply not enough floor space for it to just sit there. If you can sleep with it near your feet then you'll be okay. But I personally wouldn't have a problem with that if you were fortunate enough to be my student.

Yes, I at least caught it. We are so blessed by you being here, truthfully!

Pack a couple of bungie cords in a side pocket, just in case strapping your duffel or suitcase somewhere would make things easier and safer than having it on the floor or where it might roll onto the floor. Your instructor might appreciate your forward-thinking ...

As a trainer I can tell you trainees have a tendency to over pack majorly. Could just be girls but ive heard of the guys too. Anything you bring will ultimately end up in your bunk with you which isnt very big. Heres my suggestion: a duffle bag. Pack 7 shirts, 4 or 5 pairs of jeans, 10 pair of boxers/briefs/tighty whities ect, undershirts if you wear them and socks. A pair of shower shoes, bath stuff and work boots. Also pods to do your laundry with. Bring a sleeping bag and a pillow with case on it. That's all you need. Your trainer will have all the tools you need on the truck and at the end of training you can pick up what you need along the way. KEEP IT SIMPLE! I promise you will be too tired to do anything but sleep and eat and maybe shower. They will also probably make Walmart pitstops should you need anything further.

I remember seeing storage space under the lower bunk bed on some trucks. Any way, I went for RedGator's suggestions and now I've got a smaller suitcase. I'll buy some bungee's if I feel the need.

Unfortunately most of us trainers and OTR drivers live out of our trucks. You cant find a stitch of space in my truck besides the top bunk open. I blame my addiction to clothes and shoessmile.gif

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
