So I have my DOT Doc appt tomm and I am wondering what exactly I will be doing and where do I get my DOT medical card?

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Karl, you're going to take a fairly standard physical. You will pee in a cup, have your vision and hearing checked, they might check your reflexes with one of those little hammers to the knee. More than likely you will have to drop your drawers and cough for the doctor (henia check), and they will check your blood pressure. You may possibly have to do a few things like picking up a fifty pound weight or some such nonsense - they may even want you to do something like climbing up and down a step several times and then check your pulse after doing that something like thirty times.

Basic stuff like that so that they can evaluate your well being. You will also need to have a list of any prescription medications you take with you, including the prescribing physicians name and phone number, and it's probably a good idea to bring the actual bottles for the prescribed medications with you in case they want to get any information off the bottle. They will probably measure your neck, and will give you an overall BMI score. (Body Mass Index)

You will get your medical card from the attending physician at the completion of your office visit.

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

You'll have a regular physical exam, including basic eye exam, weigh-in, blood pressure reading, and urinalysis. Remain calm and relaxed, and breath meditatively while they take your blood pressure. If you wear eye correction, wear it. If you take prescription drugs of any kind, bring them and write them down on the urinalysis form where they ask you if you've taken any medications recently and inform the physician that this is what you take and what dose, etc. If you've taken any over-the-counter drugs in the past week, mention those too. Be very honest and up front about that stuff. Don't drink any alcohol today or tonight, if that's something you do on the weekends.

You will be issued your medical card and a "long form" (that explains the details of the medical card) before you leave the clinic. Keep your medical card with your permit and/or license in your wallet at all times as you will be required to present both, whenever you're asked by an official to present your CDL license. Keep the long form in a file at home because some companies will ask for a copy when they hire you.

That's it! Should be pretty simple if you are a generally healthy guy!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I know Swift is telling me to get the physical from a physician/NP on the national registry. They have and complete the forms. I have many in my area and a lot are at walk-in medical clinics. Look at www.nationalregistry.fmcsa.dot.gov. Hope this helps. Cheap May cost you having to do it again.

It's a DOT requirement that you get a physical from a doctor or nurse practitioner that on the National Registry. My doctor isn't on the Registry so I have to go to one who is.

Karl, everything above is correct and useful. The DMV does not give out medical cards under any circumstance. The physician has to be listed in that national registry website, or you are spinning your wheels. You will always get your card from the physician who examines you.
