Ya know what? Just rifle off a bunch of applications and see what you can get for pre-hires. The thing is, you want to get a conversation going with recruiters from various companies because every company has a few little perks. Maybe they have some nice dedicated accounts. Maybe they have unique home time packages. Maybe they'll give you a choice of loads when you're empty. Every company tries to do little things to bring in drivers and the recruiters know how to "sell" their company. So they're going to tell you every reason they can think of that you should come work for them.
There are going to be a few perks at different companies that you hadn't even considered. So the more companies you can talk with the better you'll understand your options and know what's out there.
And in the end, it never hurts to have a pile of pre-hires to choose from.

OOS:
When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
Get 40 pre-hires even if half of them you would not even consider working for. Give yourself all the options you can when first starting out. Trust me. There has been many a driver that has come through this site and they ended up going with their 4th or 5th company down on their list because as they learned more those companies seemed a better fit.

Hours Of Service
HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.
Pre-hires mean nothing!!! I got several. I had sent the one that was number one on my list my current MVR at the beginning of the pre-hire process. At the beginning!!!!!!! They had it in their file for me from the beginning!!!! Only AFTER I was 9/10's the way through their FORMAL hire process did they mention something on my MVR that would prevent them from hiring me because of their insurance requirements. And they had my MVR from the beginning!!!!! So I had to scramble and get started the formal hire process with the number two on my list, which has different insurance requirements, and to them, my current MVR was just fine!!!!!!!! So from limited experience, ask any company during the pre-hire phase if ANYTHING on your current MVR could stop you from being hired. Just my two cents worth.

Thanks guys, I'm researching companies and filling out as many pre-hires as I can. For my situation I am trying to stay as local as possible until I go out with my trainer. I'm not trying to relocate outside of California until after my first year if at all, so for now I have to stick to companies that can allow that to happen. I love Cali, but haven't seen much else as far as other states. I'd like to drive the states for a year or two n see how I like others then make a move if it tickles me right

So I think I may have found my fit! I was so focused on my top company choices that I was overlooking the competition. The advise from each of you really helped me, good looking out! I'm heading out to Central's training facility in Fontana on Monday to speak with the staff and students. Anyone here drive for them?
We've had a lot of people come through here and drive for Central and the feedback has been really good. People seem to be quite happy with their training program and working for the company.
One word of caution though - Central's training program is the same as all Company-Sponsored Training Programs in one respect - it's really fast paced. I see you're about 7% of the way through our High Road Training Program. Make sure you plan on finishing that before arriving for school. It will give you a massive advantage over anyone who hasn't taken it and a much better chance of getting through their program successfully.
CDL:
Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
- Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
- Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
- Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
- Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
Company-sponsored Training:
A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.
The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.
If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.
Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

You may have cleared all the hurdles necessary with the recruiter to get you started then someone whom you've never met or even heard of makes a decision based on information that you've already revealed to your recruiter that effectively throws you out of the game. If you've got some pre-hires lined up, all you've got to do is make a simple phone call and you'll be heading out to your next job opportunity in just a matter of days.

I've been reading old post on Central and the speed of the school was brought up a couple times. I plan on getting my permit before going to Central's program just to make things easier. I would like to start classes in July, so I will be using that time to finish the High Road Training Program and get my permit

That's the main thing I wanted to be made clear when I spoke to the recruiter. He said everything was good to go over the phone, but I wont commit to anything unless he can assure me of that when I meet with him on Monday

Got one through Werner. I know it's just a pre hire , but it feels good to have. I've made a lot of progress this past week towards trucking. I also faxed an application to Schneider through my prospective cdl school, so i'll be checking in with Schneider for another. Gordon Trucking has caught my attention, still checking them out but will prob apply there as well
