Not wanting to thread jack the WE LP thread I thought I would ask a few of you about becoming an O/O by utilizing a bit different method. I have been self employed since I was 19 years old. So I know about risk/reward based business planning. So here is my crazy notion. What if you are an older single person that plans to OTR and save every dime you can by living basically out of your cab and 2 or 3 years down the road you just outright purchase a nice 60 to 70K tractor? Then you don't have the worry of ever falling behind on your payments as you own it.
I really want to get into the business as a company driver and get some top notch experience under my belt and then when I hit that magic age say mid 60s perhaps own a really nice tractor and haul say show cars to events. Maybe I am dreaming on that...LOL
I was taught, anything is possible... There are drivers who sell everything they own, climb in the truck and live in it for every day. take what you have now, and see what you pay for and then delete everything you would give up (probably everything but cell phone?) you'll see right off the bat you'll save 1500/month and only pay a cell phone bill. ,
My wife an I pretty much did this, we gave up our appartment in CA (900$), Electric (70), Gas (20), Cable (120) ( theses are all fake numbers just FYI) Thats 1100 in bills we don't pay.. which is 1100 in my pocket. so If i save the 1100 a month x 12 months = 13200 /yr and 66000 in 5 yrs..
OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
