I hate people who try to talk me out of doing something I Really want to do. I have family & friends that know I'm about to go to trucking school but their not wishing me the best, but is wishing that I change my mind which is NOT going to happen because its my Destiny to complete school & get my CDL. So TT how do you handle people that don't want you to better yourself or people who downtalk your career change???

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Personally I ignored all my friends and family. A lot of people still have the mentality that truck drivers are the worst people in the world.

The only thing that matters is if you support your decision (and if you have a significant other, their opinion should matter too),

Thanks David...Yes indeed I support my decision and my wife supports my decision. I'm just baffled on why people that no nothing about trucking have all negative s_ _ _ to say but David with some people if they think you'll get ahead of them in some way then their gonna be mad regardless.

Baffle:

A partition or separator within a liquid tank, used to inhibit the flow of fluids within the tank. During acceleration, turning, and braking, a large liquid-filled tank may produce unexpected forces on the vehicle due to the inertia of liquids.

It sucks, I've got the same problem. I have some friends and family that are cool with it and even happy for me. They were supportive and said if that's what you want to do then go for it and they see it as I'm trying to better myself.

Unfortunately my Dad, who I've always looked up to, hates the idea and well.. Long story short and without dropping expletives, we probably won't be seeing each other for awhile.

Concern for someone you care about is one thing. Being negative, anti-supportive and down right nasty to someone is altogether a different story.

Five weeks ago I started the thread below and got some great feedback from a lot of people regarding how it went down with me telling my Pop about wanting to get into trucking. I'm sure your situation is different than mine but I got a lot of sound advice generally speaking about dealing with negative influences.

Time sensitive! Breaking the news to the Family!

Some friends and family just don't understand why we would chose this as a life style. Some are baffled and others just think we lost our minds...

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Indeed a ton of people face that same situation...they get some support from some people, but others are very much against it. I didn't find anyone that thought it was a good idea at first.

I think it's a combination of two things mentioned above....

1) Some people simply don't like to see others take a shot at making a better life for themselves. Maybe their lazy or maybe they're afraid to take a shot at something they'd really like to do but either way it's embarrassing to see others go for it while they remain stuck in the mud.

2) The trucking industry, and truckers in general, have about the worst reputation of any career I know of. Even though people hate politicians and lawyers, at least they make a lot of money and wear a suit to work. Truck drivers have famously been bottom of the barrel in our society for decades now. So a lot of people are just sickened by the idea even though they know little to nothing about the career itself.

In the end you'll find that people will tend to mirror your feelings. I was 21 when I started driving and I've always been a very positive and enthusiastic person. I loved the idea of driving truck, and loved driving them even more! I cherished my time on the road and most of the time couldn't believe I was being paid to cruise around the country in a beautiful big rig and living that lifestyle. Once my family and friends saw how much fun I was having, got a tour of the truck, and heard some of the stories they knew I had made a great decision and that I was extremely happy. That changed everything. Then people were happy for me and enjoyed the long list of crazy stories I could drum up on a moment's notice.

So don't sweat it a bit. Just stick to your guns and focus on learning all you can and enjoying yourself. Once they see you're happy, you're making decent money, and you're enjoying what you're doing they'll come around. Until then don't worry about it a bit.

EPU:

Electric Auxiliary Power Units

Electric APUs have started gaining acceptance. These electric APUs use battery packs instead of the diesel engine on traditional APUs as a source of power. The APU's battery pack is charged when the truck is in motion. When the truck is idle, the stored energy in the battery pack is then used to power an air conditioner, heater, and other devices

I want to echo what Brett said. Stay positive and show them how proud you are to be a trucker and proud of the great service you're providing this country. Anytime someone asks you how the job is going, tell them with all the enthusiasm in the world how much fun you're having and how much of an adventure it is. Your happiness will rub off on them and eventually win them over.

Just keep at it and you'll soon see things change. Good luck!
