I'm doing a round trip from Chicago to Indianapolis and back requiring a return to Chicago time of 8:00am Monday morning. Can anyone recommend where and/or what is the best resource to determine road conditions and when it is safe to resume travel. Looks like we are going to get hammered Saturday through Monday morning in Chicago. I was thinking maybe Indiana State Police Non-Emergency .......

WIBC 93.1 FM is a great local radio station that will have great weather updates. Right now in Indy it's pretty mild but north on 65 past Lebanon is where it looks to be getting worse. I'll let you know if I hear anything more throughout the day.

I pick up a load in Crawfordsville just after midnight and am heading to NW Ohio, crappy roads too

Fm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

I think the biggest problem will be freezing of the roads tonight as the temp drops. 65 is often a mess, especially if the wind blows even just a little bit. It becomes a skating rink and doesn't take long before there's a jacknifed rig that closes the highway.

Try to find out what radio stations in your area carry the "weather band" station. There are also "weather apps" for some "smart phone."

Yes, I'm trying to triangulate between apps and website to get best information.

I found a neat map online with driving directions through Indiana: Link - Road Report with Route http://indot.carsprogram.org/#roadReports/pickARoute Purple on the route is difficult, Blue is fair and gray is good. Check it out.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
