TCA and CarriersEdge recognize trucking companies for providing outstanding places to work

Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) and CarriersEdge of Markham, Ontario, have selected 20 trucking companies from across North America as the 2015 Best Fleets to Drive For. The 7th annual survey and contest identifies for-hire trucking companies that provide the best workplace experiences for their drivers.

This year’s winners are as follows:

Bay and Bay Transportation - Eagan, Minnesota

Bison Transport - Winnipeg, Manitoba

Boyle Transportation - Billerica, Massachusetts

Central Oregon Truck Company, Inc - Redmond, Oregon

Erb Group - New Hamburg, Ontario

Farm2Fleet - Chattanooga, Tennessee

Fremont Contract Carriers, Inc. - Fremont, Nebraska

FTC Transportation, Inc. - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Grand Island Express, Inc. - Grand Island, Nebraska

Halvor Lines, Inc. - Superior, Wisconsin

Interstate Distributor Co. - Tacoma, Washington

Kriska Holdings Ltd. - Prescott, Ontario

Landstar System, Inc. - Jacksonville, Florida

Liberty Linehaul Inc. - Ayr, Ontario

Motor Carrier Service, Inc. - Northwood, Ohio

Nussbaum Transportation - Hudson, Illinois

Paramount Freight Systems - Ft Myers, Florida

Tennant Truck Lines, Inc. - Colona, Illinois

TransPro Freight Systems Ltd. - Milton, Ontario

WTI Transport - Tuscaloosa, Alabama

In addition, five companies have been identified as “Fleets to Watch” (honorable mentions) for demonstrating innovation in their driver programs:

Challenger Motor Freight Inc. - Cambridge, Ontario

Drive Logistics - Windsor, Ontario

Veriha Trucking, Inc. - Marinette, Wisconsin

Melton Truck Lines, Inc. - Tulsa, Oklahoma

Raider Express - Ft. Worth, Texas

To be considered for the Best Fleets program, a company operating 10 trucks or more had to be nominated by at least one of its company drivers or owner operators. CarriersEdge then interviewed human resources representatives and executives of the nominated fleets about their corporate direction, policies, and programs. Nominated fleets were evaluated against a scoring matrix covering a variety of categories, such as:

Total compensation package – including base pay, bonuses, vacation, and sick day allotment

~ Health benefits

~ Pension plans

~ Professional development opportunities (training, coaching programs, etc.)

~ Career path/advancement opportunities

~ Commitment to employee personal growth, including work/life balance, driver family support, and employee-directed charitable contributions

~ Commitment to continuous improvement, including dispute resolution processes and inclusion of driver feedback in policymaking

~ Team building and driver community development activities

~ Annual driver turnover rate

~ Fleet safety record

A selection of each fleet’s drivers was also surveyed, with their feedback compared to management’s and incorporated into the final score. The responses were then tallied, resulting in the selection of this year’s winners and honorable mentions.

“This year, we saw a large increase in the number of companies with retirement plans that included a company match, like a 401(k),” said Jane Jazrawy, chief executive officer of CarriersEdge. “We also noted that many companies are providing mobile devices to their drivers, often with custom mobile apps to go with them. New for this year, we saw a few fleets offering guaranteed pay for their drivers, similar to the base salary that sales reps or consultants might receive.”

When examining the list of winners and Best Fleets to Watch, Brad Bentley, president of TCA, commented: “I’m pleased to see that four of these companies were flagged as Fleets to Watch in the past and five are also finalists in TCA’s National Fleet Safety Awards. Clearly, these fleets are doing something right, and their efforts are paying off on multiple levels!”

The next phase of the contest will be to divide the highest scoring fleets into small and large fleet categories, from which two overall winners will be selected. These awards will be sponsored by Marsh, Inc., of New York, New York, and Bose Ride of Framingham, Massachusetts.

The overall winners’ names will be announced at the March 10th awards ceremony during TCA’s Annual Convention at the Gaylord Palms Resort in Kissimmee, Florida. Between February 24 and March 5, clues about the winners’ identities will be posted with the hashtag #BestFleets15 to TCA’s Twitter account (www.truckload.org/Twitter) and Facebook page (www.truckload.org/Facebook).

Owner Operator:

An owner-operator is a driver who either owns or leases the truck they are driving. A self-employed driver.

Interstate:

Commercial trade, business, movement of goods or money, or transportation from one state to another, regulated by the Federal Department Of Transportation (DOT).

Linehaul:

Linehaul drivers will normally run loads from terminal to terminal for LTL (Less than Truckload) companies.

LTL (Less Than Truckload) carriers will have Linehaul drivers and P&D drivers. The P&D drivers will deliver loads locally from the terminal and pick up loads returning them to the terminal. Linehaul drivers will then run truckloads from terminal to terminal.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Interesting that NONE of the starter companies made the list.

I actually know/am friends with the owner of Farm To Fleet. They are a growing O/O-only outfit, with a very unique business model.

Bison, Challenger, and Kriska are viewed by Canadian truckers as the big starter companies. Bison has a new driver program, too.

Nice to see Interstate on the list. Just kinda reinforces my feeling that I made a good choice when it came time to tell Jerry Moyes where to stick it.

I am close to starting with Veriha out of Wisconsin. Should be Monday. It is great to see them on a list.
