Hi

My name is Scott Martin and I am a young 34 year old driver wanting to get experience and work and live in America.

I am going for the Australian version of a CDL (road train license) next week, and my aim is to make it to America; to become a truck driver.

I have had 2 hours of training in a Heavy Combination (18 Wheeler), 200hrs driving HR and under 500hrs driving MR trucks.

Due to the fact I lack the hours, I am getting knocked back by companies in Australia. I have already applied for the 2016 green card lottery, but I was hoping to get their quicker via a work visa if possible. I am willing to do whatever it takes to achieve my life long goal of becoming a Truck Driver and a permanent US Citizen.

I have been in formed by the US Embassy in Australia, that if you did wish to hire me, you must: 1)Pick the correct visa, 2)have a I-140 form (Immigrant Petition for Alien Worker) 3)Labour Certification Form, 4)Fixed deposit form for my expenses whilst in the states, or until first pay cheque.

I would be happy to negotiate a lower wage in lue of training or other associated costs, or a repayment scheme straight out of my pay-cheque.

I also maybe able to get assistance from my local employment agencies to get to the states, if I had a letter of employment. Also since I am becoming an American Citizen, I would be able to draw on my Superannuation (401k), which is only 2500 usd, but this would take a little while to do.

I have also had reports from 3 Australian friends over in the USA permanently now, that to get a valid drivers license, I have to go to the DMV and show them my Australian Drivers License and Passport and they can issue me and American one.

Can anyone help or know of the correct procedure in which to do this. Being on the dole/welfare isn't a huge money saver as I barely get 400 aud a fortnight.

Kind Regards and Thanks in Advance.

Scott

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

I would start calling truck companies and asking how to verify all their criteria. I was asked to provide original birth certificate, original social security card, three years of employment verification,(tax forms and paycheck stubs),and residency verification.I needed current mail at my address dated less than 60 days old. You may need to get here, stay with friends and order a few magazine subscriptions to get some mail flowing. Many people had errors on their documents and were sent home, bring any documents you even might suspect will be needed. Their is a shortage of driver jobs, you just need to jump through all the hurdles they will throw at you.

Hi Scott, I'm not an expert on Imagration law here in the US, but what I've read is Truck driving here is considered a Non Skilled job, of course we all know that's not true, but the training dosen't take as long as becoming an Engineer or Computer specialist. That being said I believe that the US dosen't issue work permits for non skilled jobs to non Citizens, I could be wrong ? I know to become a US citizen takes a long time, maybe you could emigrate to Canada and then legally drive in the US on a Canadian permit while your figgering this all out, Good Luck
