I got me some new red wings back in early jan. My bday present to my self. I use to get the athletes steel toe but this time I chose the hikers Irish Setters. I enjoy these boot. I did take a good week or 2 to get use to them while driving. I also drive barefoot half the time and more often during summer. Some states it's actually legal to drive barefoot.

A good pair of shoes will help your low back from being in pain when walking. A lot of back problems stem from bad shoes.

I used to date a girl who worked at a Red Wing store and I would get 35% employee discount on those boots. They really are the absolute best boots, at least I think. I'd probably have to pay double price now.

I would keep the Redwings, it's going to take time to break them in. Might try a light wait hiking boot (Hi-tech is a quality brand) and get a pair of Pac boots for the snow, like The North Face. Maybe pickup some rain gear too, like Helly Hansen. What ever you decide, go for quality and they wont fail

I wear boots year round but I also wear wool socks in them. They will keep your feet drier than cotton socks and they are not that hot like people think.

Red Wings are great boots, I'm also a big fan of Timberlands, they wear well and are extremely comfortable. I also agree with the comment on the wool socks. They're comfy year round and my feet don't sweat, although I change my socks twice a day, call me weird.

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

Remember what you will be doing most of the time in your boots: sitting down, pushing pedals. Yes you can do that all day long with sandals.

Out around the truck is where you need protection. I'm all for a decent pair of light hiking boots, (ankle high, not sneaker style) even from Walmart. Yes, Reds are thee boot, but light hikers will do the job 99.9% of the time. (This opinion comes from years of hiking & learning about foot protection)

Great Answer!

Mikki I got me a pair of Redwing hiking boots and love them. They did take some getting used to but they are all I wear when I am on the road. Since I do a regional dedicated route I am in and out of my truck quite a bit and I like the stability and support they give me climbing in and out of my truck. I opted not to get the steel toed ones because I have only been one place that required them and that was when I was in training. You would never be able to tell mine aren't steel toed just by looking at them. Not sure what I will wear when the weather gets warm, but I have grown to love my boots.

Dedicated Route:

A driver or carrier who transports cargo between regular, prescribed routes. Normally it means a driver will be dedicated to working for one particular customer like Walmart or Home Depot and they will only haul freight for that customer. You'll often hear drivers say something like, "I'm on the Walmart dedicated account."

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

What are you going to do when your toes get chopped off!?

What are you going to do when your toes get chopped off!?

There's been great debate about the toe chopping argument for years. Some say steel toe some say safety toe (heavy fiberglass toe) some say no need because a crush injury is a crush injury and trying to get a foot out of a crushed steel toe boot usually means lost toes anyway. I know me personally, I've always bought the ones with metatarsal protection because it seems nothing ever hits your toes but always right across the laces.
