Brian it sounds like you are on a percentage pay basis as opposed to mileage pay. Not all loads pay the same, and some of them have additional charges, etc. that are involved. That is one reason why I recommend folks stick with mileage pay, that way you know what you are getting.
It's certainly not as simple as I just made it sound, but there is a lot of room for grey areas when receiving percentage pay, and some folks can get very creative at making it mysterious as to how much the driver should be getting out of a load.

Im new trucking industry. Example... If my company charges a customer 1,000 dollars to drop off a load and I get a percentage of that,But when I get dispatched to pick up a back haul on the way back to my terminal why does my company charge the company 400 for me to pick it up. Why is pay different? Can anyone offer an answer that would help me understand. Because it doesn't make sense to me. Thank you
Terminal:
A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.
