How old are you now? The shoplifting charge might not be the one that's holding you back but that driving without a license is one they will look at pretty hard. Your CDL is gold and needs to be treated as such. Not to mention, a company that is going to trust you to drive a high dollar vehicle hauling high dollar cargo all over the country in every type of weather needs to know they can Trust you.

Say you were on a run, did something really stupid and got your license suspended. Then you turn around, never telling them and haul a load and get in an accident. Not only have you done something even more boneheaded than driving while suspended, you've damaged a load, vehicles, maybe injured people and now they're going to get sued. It's a huge risk and an even bigger liability.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Joshua, sorry to hear your having all sorts of problems but it sounds like there is something on your record that either you're not aware of or not telling us about. If your being truthful I would pay to have copies of my DMV record and criminal record made. Yes the government has been known to make mistakes. If you find an error you are going to have an uphill battle but it can be done. I myself live in Florida and find it is also hard to find carriers during certain seasons that will hire you do to the lack of freight coming out. You also mentioned you received your license at a CDL school. Don't they have job placement? Was it a school that gave you the necessary 160 hours of instruction? Where there any recruiters that came by? The lack of information you have given cannot let us make an informed opinion. Did all the dates and times of where you worked and background information match what comes up on your background check? I think you need to look into this a little further. One other thing I have heard of people having problems with past employers not giving correct info. If your as clean as you say someone will take a shot on you, don't concede failure yet. Now do your homework.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

Pre Hire:

What Exactly Is A Pre-Hire Letter?

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.

A Pre-Hire Letter Is Not A Guarantee Of Employment

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.

During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

I have alot of driving on suspended license on my record and I had no problem do it's not that... My last driving on suspended license was 2010 .... Check your driving record and a report from hireright.Com to make sure there's nothing on it you don't know about... Try crst or Werner you can even try cr England...

It could be as simple as location. Florida is tough to get a load out of and from what I've read can be difficult to get hired from for the simple fact it doesn't fall in the hiring area for a lot of companies. Another issue could be that they aren't hiring from that area right now but might be in a couple months.

It's great you finally got a few bites on your line, Joshua. But remember this: "You don't have a job until you have a job." Until you sit down at 7:00am for the first orientation, you still need to keep looking, applying and asking around.

If your been reading the TT Forum threads much, you know that the main way into the business is to get hired by a large trucking company and run OTR for a while. But you should have also read that local companies might be gearing up for spring and summer.

You're job search isn't done till you fill out that New Employee form. Good luck!

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
