I have high functioning aspergers and take these meds

Prozac 40mg morning Wellbutrin 100mg morning Buspar 20mg morning Buspar 20 mg night

Only side effect I suffer is sexual in nature ,my aspergers just makes me do poor in social settings but other than that I'm fine . i tried trucking without meds and I did alright but got a bit depressed and went back on them .

I fear If i do get a D.O.T. phsycial well on meds I'll have to disclose aspergers and that means I'll have to list it on every physical after since failures are not sent to the states file .

The concern they have is with medications that will make you drowsy or interfere with your cognitive functions in some way. Kinda bad idea to let someone zinging along on a heavy dosage of Xanax behind the wheel of an 80,000 pound rig, ya know?

To be honest I don't know what companies would think about Aspergers. I've never heard it mentioned before with regard to trucking. I know the medications need to be approved by a DOT physician. As long as they don't interfere with your ability to drive you're good to go.

If you're taking undisclosed medications and you get hit with a drug test that could be the end of driving for you....at least for a long while. Make sure nothing undisclosed shows up on a drug test. I know for a fact they ask you on DOT physical forms about any medications you're taking, and any prescriptions have to be approved for commercial driving.

Have you spoken with your doctor about whether or not those prescriptions would be allowed?

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

I have a Dr's appointment with my psychatrist on the 10th and will ask her to write me a letter ,I "know" she won't do that though in which case I'm gonna have her take me off the prozac since its the only one with drowsness listed as a "major" side effect (I don't suffer from it though ,plus the wellbutrin is a stimulant )

The problem is once I list aspergers on a D.O.T form it goes into the data base ,if it were depression or the like I could be cured and stop meds . But "aspergers is for life" so meh .

I can't speak for what they'll say about Aspergers but I'm pretty sure if you test positive for Prozac you won't have to worry about driving a truck for a long time. I would seriously get all this straightened out right away and make sure you're totally legal out there. You know this industry isn't big on giving second chances without making you wait for years to do it or make you claw your way up from the bottom.

I believe there's also a time limit for how long you have to wait before you can drive after taking unapproved drugs. It might be 30 days.

We have a bunch of information on Alcohol and Drug Policies & Testing.

Actually the Prozac and Wellbutrin will be treated the same way as they're considered mind altering and mood altering chemicals. Like you Brett, in his shoes, I would get with my doctor and see if there's something that will work but keep him off the list.

Please forgive me for revising this zombie thread, but I can shine some light on this for future reference.

I am an Aspie myself and I've been driving for over six months now. Like the OP, I do take one of the mentoined meds (Buspar). Another med I am on is AdderallXR (25mg). My Dr had no problems signing off the authorization for the AdderallXR ,but the caveat was that I was to be on Buspar instead of Xanax.

I was completely honest with my DOT physicians (I've had three physicals, two with the same for school and my current local company, one with Schneider) and came prepared with all meds and authorization letter. I was told that I was one of the most well prepared visits ever. The only questions they asked about them was to be straight up with them about how the meds affect me and I was honest. I was issued a one year card, but I can't complain because the company pays for them.

Yes, I'll admit that I was sweating bullets because I didn't know my Dr's attitude about signing off on medications like these and then going to the physicals, but it all worked out in the end.

I have been driving with a perfect safety record when I've been told many times that I wouldn't be able to make it as an Aspie and having ADD. I am not by any means trying to be on a soapbox, so please don't take it that way. There is hope for people like the OP and myself to have a rewarding career as a driver, we just have some extra hoops to jump through compared to "Typicals" 😊

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.
