$7,000 ????? That's crazy. That is indeed what insurance is for. I've never heard of a driver having pay deducted for cargo damage. I don't think that's gonna fly for them legally. You might want to speak with an attorney about that. If it was $70 I'd say forget about it but that's a huge amount.
And when companies are insured for cargo it's normally in the million dollar range. A $7,000 claim is nothing.

I did tractor service for a company in BC. I hauled a trailer from BC to Alberta. Upon arriving at the warehouse in Alberta for a delivery i had noticed that some of the cargo had fallen in the reefer. The trucking company i am sub contracted under say the damage was worth 7000$ and they will be deducting it from my paycheck. When i suggested we go through cargo insurance, the company explained they didn't want their insurance rate to go up. I am wondering, by law, is a trucking company required to file a cargo claim if there is damage done to the goods?
