So I've been on the road for 2 weeks now and have been paying attention to where other drivers and putting there GPS systems. So I bought a Rand McNally and have head so many mixed responses as to where the best place to put it is. The charge cable port os located on the rear of the device so I can't mount it flat on a surface but I have it mounted on the windshield right under the PrePass/EZPASS module near the tip of the windshield.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have found for me the best place is toward the middle of the windshield just above the dash. Easy to reach/program/read, and out of the way of your direct line of vision.

Like Ernie, I have mine in the lower right corner of the window, just above the dash. Actually just left of center, and I have the bottom edge resting on the dash itself to keep the bouncing and banging around from putting excess stress on the mounting bracket.

If you check your FMCSA handbook closely, you will find that placement of any device that rests within the path of the drivers side windshield wiper is a DOT violation. This can present a problem in some makes of truck, requiring you to dash mount or side window mount your GPS. The trick to getting past this one, is either get the GPS off the windshield entirely, or put the suction cup just outside the path of the wiperblade. Also, be careful when doing this, that you don't block your vision in either of your hood mounted mirrors with the GPS.

Some drivers never read the regulation books thoroughly enough to catch this one, but if you get pulled over for an inspection or ticket, this violation could be added to your list of offenses, depending on the DOT officer involved.

while this is true i have never had an issue with it. all depends on a drivers attitude

My guess is that once caught, it has more to do with the DOT Officers attitude than the drivers attitude. Once a driver gets caught, the best he can do is hope for leniency from the DOT Officer and leniency from the Judge. Best bet, is to just comply with the law from the time your tractor is issued, so that way you have no worries. Besides, there are usually specific reasons for every DOT requirement, and most of them are based on saving lives. You wouldn't want to have a lane change accident, because your line of vision was blocked by a GPS mounted in an illegal location. It's all about minimizing the variables, and minimizing preventable accidents.
