In fact i'm starting to have second thoughts about Prime. I'm reading on here that solo company drivers are issued the small cramped trucks (LW) and i'm not sure that's for me. I was assuming i would have a larger space if i was going to be out so long. I guess I have some more thinking to do.

Thanks again for the heads up

Don't let the size of the truck discourage you. Most are saying that you just have to ask for a full sized truck and you'll get that instead. Have you seen Daniel's thread about LW trucks?

I'm not sure who the most are but unless something changed since last year, it doesn't work like that at all. You WILL get a LW unless you have a special need for a full size. IE am a large person (over 6'3" or 250+ or other). Simply asking won't work. I'd get this in writing from a recruiter before you show up for orientation. Also the LW only go to reefer division. Flatbed and tanker get full size truck's always.

It's possible things have changed. There're random comments here and other places about being able to request a full-size versus a fun size even if you aren't a person who needs more space but, they could be from a few months to a year ago since I tend to dig into the "golden oldies" on the forums. I did ask a recruiter on the phone about the LW fleet and said I wanted a LW and the recruiter, without prompting, added that a full-size could be requested so, it'd be worth asking about via email.

I'll just take the additional money and less space to collect my junk. :P

I'll also be out there on June 22nd in Springfield. I'm out of California though so a bit of distance. Planning on finishing packing everything up here next week and studying a bit more for the permit test. I'm worried about the permit but realize it's going to be some work.

I have been working my way through the High Road and so far seems fairly easy although I have missed a few questions. I really hope the state test is as easy.....

Hi David...I passed the NC test without any problems and only used the High Road as my Study Guide.. make sure you take the tanker and doubles/triples trailer also.

Doubles:

Refers to pulling two trailers at the same time, otherwise known as "pups" or "pup trailers" because they're only about 28 feet long. However there are some states that allow doubles that are each 48 feet in length.

I'm sitting at a Love's T/S in just outside of Murfreesboro, TN waiting to p/u a load going thru Springfield so I can pick up a PSD. I'm getting a list of students later today. I should be in Springfield tomorrow night. (20th) Sounds like everyone is coming on the 22nd. If anyone is at Prime right now looking for a trainer let me know. Looking for male/smoker that lives anywhere as I'm not going to train in the TNT phase as I don't have enough time to get one done before I take my leave in August to Jamaica.

PSD:

Prime Student Driver

Prime Inc has a CDL training program and the first phase is referred to as PSD. You'll get your permit and then 10,000 miles of on the road instruction.

The following is from Prime's website:

Prime’s PSD begins with you obtaining your CDL permit. Then you’ll go on the road with a certified CDL instructor for no less than 75 hours of one-on-one behind the wheel training. After training, you’ll return to Prime’s corporate headquarters in Springfield, Missouri, for final CDL state testing and your CDL license.

Obtain CDL Permit / 4 Days

  • Enter program, study and test for Missouri CDL permit.
  • Start driving/training at Prime Training Center in Springfield, Missouri.
  • Work toward 40,000 training dispatched miles (minimum) with food allowance while without CDL (Food allowance is paid back with future earnings).

On-the-Road Instruction / 10,000 Miles

  • Train with experienced certified CDL instructor for 3-4 weeks in a real world environment.
  • Get 75 hours of behind-the-wheel time with one-on-one student/instructor ratio.
  • Earn 10,000 miles toward total 40,000 miles needed.

TNT:

Trainer-N-Trainee

Prime Inc has their own CDL training program and it's divided into two phases - PSD and TNT.

The PSD (Prime Student Driver) phase is where you'll get your permit and then go on the road for 10,000 miles with a trainer. When you come back you'll get your CDL license and enter the TNT phase.

The TNT phase is the second phase of training where you'll go on the road with an experienced driver for 30,000 miles of team driving. You'll receive 14¢ per mile ($700 per week guaranteed) during this phase. Once you're finished with TNT training you will be assigned a truck to run solo.

I'm at Springfield right now. Who's here? If not, what's your ETA?
