I'm a new driver and would like to know do all trucks shift the same? Is it a situation where if you have shifted one you've shift them all and if given a different truck do you just get in and your flow of shifting doesn't change no matter if its a Freightliner, International, volvo, etc?

Now to really throw a monkey wrench into your thinking, if they were all standard 10 speeds then yea you are correct. Now think about a 13 or 18 speed transmission, totally different beast. Even if they were all the same make/model they all shift just a little different (just like all humans are different). The basics stay the same, but they are all just a little bit different.

When I was at Prime, I drove a 2011, 2010, and 2 different 2012 Freightliner Cascadia's. All had DD15 engines, all had 10 speed transmissions, but they all shifted just a little different. Same pattern, just because they were all built the same, because they were not all identical (even if they were) they all had their own quirks.

All the trucks shift differently, even with the same make, engine, and transmission. In school, when we drove different trucks, some shifted smooth as butter, and others,I would grind gears often.most instructors told me the newer trucks were tighter, the older trucks sloppier, but Ive driven new trucks that shifted both ways.I opted for an automatic, and love it,although I mostly drive it in manual mode. Not every truck offers this feature.

I would not spend too much time fretting over the different shifting characteristics of trucks. It appears Most big companies are switching their fleets to automatics.
