I have a class B from Colorado but live in Mississippi now. The CDL school I'm looking at, to get my class A, is here in Mississippi and they tell me I must have a MS license to even attend. Is this true? My CO license is good until 2017. My medical card expires this year though. That's another question, can I get another medical card in MS with a CO cdl?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Generally speaking, states like to have residents have licenses from the state they live in. So, of you live in Mississippi, the usual number is you officially have ten days to transfer your Colorado license to Mississippi.

That's why the school is blowing you off.

Where you at in MS?

In MS, you have 90 days to get a license if you become a resident. Why would the school care? What if I lived in Alaska and wanted to attend their school? They would want me to get a MS license? Even though I'm from here, originally, I don't want to become a resident, even though legally I am. I want to keep my CO license because I do plan on getting back out there. I'm in crappie Senatobia by the way.

Chances are very high that your MS school teaches MS CDL laws & isn't going to break the mold to teach one student CO or AK laws.

Some schools will teach other state's laws, but if they say "No" there's not much you can do.

One of the problems the school faces is that they can't set you up for testing. You would have to return to Colorado to pass all of your written and driving exams. There could also be funding issues for the school or state laws prohibiting them from taking out-of-state residents or licenses.

I'm pretty sure you can take your DOT physical anywhere you like. It shouldn't matter if you're in a different state from where your license is issued.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
