What's up guys. I am 36 and looking for a change. I have a clean driving record, don't drink or smoke but smoke herb occasionally. I am willing to give this up for this career that looks exciting. I am able and willing to be away from home for weeks at a time. Do I qualify?

I'd say you qualify, just make sure you quit the herb WELL in advance of taking any steps in this direction. Many companies test hair follicles, which can go back several months, and virtually all companies do a urine test at a minimum. If you fail a drug test at the beginning of this career, you will be looking for a different career guaranteed.

What if you're bald? not that it matters for me, I don't drink, smoke or do any drugs legal or illegal.

They can take hair from any part of your body. I've been doing my home work. :) Here's a good explanation of hair testing. https://www.health-street.net/blog-drug-testing/hair-drug-testing-facts-and-myths/

Epic, I just wanted to add something here. We recently had a guy in here who was in a similar situation to yours. He did not give himself enough time to have his system clean before he went to get tested. He could pass a urine test, but not a hair follicle test. As a former employer for thirty years I know that those failed pre-employment drug tests are not covered by the HIPPA laws. If you fail one it is available for future employers to see, and I can assure you that trucking companies use all their resources to uncover anything like that - if they don't they expose themselves to some tremendous liabilities were you to get involved in an accident.

Take care to make sure you can pass both tests before you embark on this adventure. The D.O.T. only requires a urine test, but individual employers or schools have the freedom to use both tests if they so desire, and most of them are doing the hair test also now days.

If you fail that test, you are facing a monumental challenge with employment in the industry.
