If you're considering becoming a truck driver, this is the book for you!
In the past, truckers were known as "Knights of the Road". Those days are long forgotten, though, and through time the truckers and their rigs have lost their knightly reputation. Truckers are no longer depicted in a positive light and the situation looks like it may be getting worse for a number of reasons, including our own (lack of) pride and personal discipline, attitude, driving skills, and factors outside of our control including the media, more dangers on the highway, and recent waves of terrorism. Is there anything we can do to improve our reputations? Oh indeed there is plenty we can do.
Most truck drivers are paid by the mile, and most are not at all happy with the fact that they are performing a lot of job duties for free. Should drivers be paid by the hour instead? What about being paid for each duty performed? Here are some interesting issues to ponder and in the end I'll give you my take on the fairest way to pay a driver.
Congress, along with many trucking industry insiders, are claiming victory regarding the effectiveness of the new logbook rules that came out several years ago. I disagree with the conclusion that it's the new logbook rules that have made things safer on the highways and I'll explain why. Let's take a closer look at some of the myths out there and bring to light some important facts that paint a much different picture of what's really going on, and where we should go from here.
On occasion I get to go to a place called Springfield Underground. It started life as a mine for limestone and is now and underground storage facility. If you never thought you'd see a big rig driving through a cave, well here's your chance!
I decided to hypothetically put two people seeking professional careers, one a prospective college student, the other a truck driving school candidate, up against each other in a comparison of job training, annual salary, debt accumulation, and investment capability throughout their careers. The results are quite interesting.
The slow economy has really dampened demand for truck drivers in the past year or two, and now there are several factors that seem to be converging to create the "perfect storm" for truck driving demand in the decade ahead. Let's take a look at what we could be facing.
I LOVE "normal" life. We got lots of errands done, I sold some stuff on Craigslist and Randy had a little pinstriping job - we made more money today than his last paycheck. ;) He keeps saying how nice it is to be home, and I keep telling him how nice it is to have him here. Home will soon be somewhere else, and we're going to start moving tomorrow.
Truck driving has always been a great career for those of us who were cut out for the lifestyle. If you're not the right person for the job, you're really not going to like it much and you're not going to last long. But if you feel like truck driving might be the right career for you, the outlook for the industry looks to be very solid for many years to come.
There is always a healthy debate that ensues when people begin considering whether or not new laws should be enforced in the trucking industry. But the debate tends to take on a more robust tone, and sometimes becomes borderline riotous, when the idea of enforcing personal lifestyle choices on drivers becomes the topic of debate. There are a number of trucking companies that have begun to enforce weight restrictions as a hiring criteria in recent years and I believe we're going to hear a lot more about this in years to come, especially if the economy remains below par and the standard requirements for truck driving jobs remains higher than it has been in the past. The question is, should body mass index be allowed to be a criteria for hiring?
