Introduction to Hawkeye Community College

Courses offered for obtaining a CDL are taken at Hawkeye's Regional Transportation Training Center, a training location for a variety of credit and continuing education driving courses. The driving range features an open driving area, 26-foot wide road, inclines, and left and right turns. The center's building houses classrooms, drive through truck bays, and has space for four virtual driving simulators.

What Programs Does Hawkeye Offer?

  • Class A CDL Program - Hawkeye's 6-Week Class A CDL training program is a self-paced, accelerated program designed for working adults to train for a career that offers freedom, stability, and competitive pay. You progress through the program as you master the content.
  • Class B CDL Program - A 4-Week self-paced program tailored to your needs. This program will teach you how to operate trucks that require a Class B CDL license, which include vehicles such as concrete mixer trucks, snow plows, delivery trucks, moving vans, garbage trucks, tow trucks, buses, and emergency vehicles.
  • Class A & B CDL Refresher - This 40-hour individualized refresher course is designed for drivers who already have a Class A or B CDL and want to get back into the trucking industry.

Admission Requirements

Prior to starting, you must pass and pay for a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and pre-employment drug screen.

Funding Assistance

  • Company Funding - Iowa New Jobs Training Program (260E), Iowa Jobs Training Program (260F), and Accelerated Career Education (ACE) Program
  • Individual Funding - Third party sponsorship or private student loans.
  • Employee Reimbursement - Some companies offer employee reimbursement options. Hawkeye accepts full or partial payment of program tuition from employers. An agreement may be worked out between the student, employer, and Hawkeye Business and Community Education for a non-credit program.

Hawkeye Community College also offers Bus Driver Training, Heavy Equipment Operator Training and Highway Construction Training at the Regional Transportation Training Center.
