Comprehensive Driver Education

Prince George’s Community College trains and tests student drivers to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). At completion, students will be licensed to drive all commercial Class A (tractor-trailer) and B trucks (straight trucks, passenger and school buses, dump and concrete mixer trucks, and utility vehicles). Other endorsements such as Hazmat, Tanker, and Double and Triple Trailer can be added later or at time of obtaining learner’s permit. Courses consist of classroom instruction, hands-on training, license testing, and job placement assistance.

What you will learn

For the two-part CDL-A coursework, topics covered include:

  • General knowledge
  • Air brakes
  • Transporting passengers, school bus and combination vehicles
  • Federal rules and regulations
  • Hours of service logs
  • Pre-trip vehicle inspection
  • Manual transmission operation
  • Backing and parking skills
  • On-road maneuvers
  • Coupling and un-coupling the tractor and trailer
  • Mock testing

Tuition and Requirements

For admission into the CDL-A program, students must:

  • Be 21 years of age
  • Possess a valid, Non-Provisional Driver's License
  • Pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and drug screen
  • Obtain a CDL Class A Learner's Permit
