Introduction to Shelton State Community College
Commercial Truck Driving Program

The Commercial Truck Driving Program is an eight-week program offered through Community Education. Upon successful completion of the program’s course and passing the Department of Transportation (DOT) Road Test, the student will receive an operator’s license from the Alabama Department of Public Safety and a certificate of completion from Shelton State Community College. The course is 288 contact hours and WIOA and VA approved. Registration is continuous and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Enrollment Requirements

  • Current class “D” driver license with no serious driving violations
  • 21 years of age or older for Tractor-Trailer Driver Training
  • DOT physical acquired at the facility of your choice (approximately $50)
  • DOT drug screen within two weeks prior to start of class acquired at the facility of your choice (approximately $50)
  • Current moving violations report acquired at the State Troopers Office (approximately $6)
  • Current Class “A” CDL Learner’s Permit acquired at the State Troopers Office (approximately $65; Permit is required two weeks prior to the start date.)

Tuition and Expenses

  • Tuition: $1,500.00 (WIOA or VA assistance may be available if you qualify)
  • Moving Violation Report: Approximately $6.00
  • Physical and Drug Screen: Approximately $100.00
  • Permit Exam: $25.00
  • Retake any portion of Permit Exam: $15.00
  • Purchase of Permit: $36.25
