Commercial Driver's License Training Program

York County School of Technology has graduated more than 1,400 students over the past 21 years. The school says it has "built a reputation for producing qualified, skillful drivers with the knowledge and attitude necessary to get the job done."

Real-life situations are incorporated into the program so students will have the confidence and skills needed to enter the job market. To do that, class sizes are kept at a level to allow students ample vehicle time to acquire those skills.

Admissions Requirements

To be admitted to the program, applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age for driving within the State (Intrastate) or be 21 years of age and older to be eligible for interstate driving.
  • Have a valid Pennsylvania Driver's License.
  • Have a valid Class "A" Knowledge Test Authorization.
  • Pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and drug screen.
  • Provide a current 10-year driving record.

The admissions procedure includes interviewing with the CDL Coordinator, arranging for payment of tuition, passing a DOT physical and drug screen, obtaining knowledge test authorization, and providing an MVR driving record.

What Does the YCST Truck Driving Program
Program Profile Consist Of?

The 200-hour Class A program is offered as a full-time class operating Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., requiring approximately five weeks for completion. Also, part time week-end classes 8:00 - 5:00 requiring approximately twelve week-ends to complete. The program consists of three phases: Classroom, Yard, and Road Time.

Classroom Coverage:

  • Preparation for written exams includes, General Knowledge, Air Brakes, Combinations, Doubles/Triples, Haz-Mat and Tankers
  • Other areas covered include State and Federal Laws, Driver's Logs, Skid Control, Pre-Trip Inspection, Load and Weight, Distribution, Map Reading and Trip Planning, National Safety Council Defensive Driving, Driver Qualifications, Driver Wellness, Whistleblower Protection

  • Straight-Line Backing
  • Blind-Side Parallel Parking
  • Sight-Side Parallel Parking
  • Alley Docking
  • Off-Set Backing and Docking
  • Serpentine
  • Coupling/Uncoupling
  • Pre-Trip

Road Coverage:

  • Shifting
  • Missed Gear Recovery
  • Entrance and Exit Ramps
  • Cornering
  • Turns
  • Traffic Association
  • Defensive Driving
  • Interstate, Rural and City Roads

Fee Information

The course runs for 200 hours, and is Veterans Administration approved. Visa, MasterCard and Discover credit cards are accepted.

  • Class A - $4595.00 effective 07/01/2018.
  • Approximately $295.00 for a permit, including a 10 year driving record, DOT Physical and drug screen, endorsements, and Homeland security check if adding Hazardous Materials endorsement.
  • A $30.00 fee will be charged on all returned checks.
