Passenger Vehicle license before CDL (1 year or NOT 1 year)

Hi, I'm totally new here. I'm from the US, but been out of the US for a long time. My last US license expired around 2013. Before that, I had US licenses for decades...

I've been looking at companies with CDL their own CDL programs. The few I've called said to have active license IN THE PAST 12-24 months. BUT every PAID CDL school I've looked at says "just have an active license". So my question is, is the 1 year thing a strong rule across the industry? If I paid for a school, are COMPANIES still going to tell me "Come back after 1 year is up!" even with a CDL?

I'm aware the market is pretty bad right now, especially for people with ZERO experience. Seems like bad news everywhere. Hope it gets better!
