LTL companies pay better?

I work as an ltl city driver, and yes the pay is great, im paid by the hour with overtime after 8 hours, so i dont do anything for free. I work about 50 to 60 hours a week, work monday through friday and sleep in my own bed every single night. I make substantially more doing this than i did otr, for much less hours worked. I will say this though, it is HARD work, and ive done as many as 20 to 23 stops in one day, but usually average around 14 or so. You will learn to be a truck backing GOD cause you will spend so much time in reverse

Can someone really show up to work everyday knowing that....

Operators must safely operate a 45 foot motor coach between any two given points, any time of the day, for up to 15 working hours per day, not to exceed 70 hours in 8 days.

That's why getting a local job in trucking is something I normally discourage for anyone looking to get started in trucking but get home every night. Yeah, you'll get home every night. But just long enough to eat, take a shower, and pass out for 6 hours before getting up and doing it again. Rough schedule.

My p/d route is downtown san francisco, but i only work around 8.5 to 11.5 hours on most days.

Difficult Docs

Im a local driver doing P/D, and i often have to back into the tight spots like that everyday multiple times. Backing up through a busy intersection is always fun

Personal safety.

I do P/D within the SF Bay Area and I am often in bad areas such as east and west oakland, and other bad areas on a near daily basis, i just keep my doors locked and avoid eye contact with anyone and people dont bother me. Unless im backing in off the street in san francisco then i get cussed at and honked at and flipped off haha

About gps...and use map..

Im a local p/d driver in the sf bay area, i usually just use google maps to route myself, i have to drive on "no trucks" roads everyday to make my deliveries and pickups so ive never felt the need to buy a truck specific gps. Wouldnt do me much good in downtown san francisco haha.

72 hour safety check starts tomorrow .

I do local LTL p/d and rarely cross any scales and I'm still nervous lol. I already have a failed level 1 inspection under my belt from when I was with schneider

Sent my 2 weeks in..

Figured I'd update you all on the out come...

I got the job with Salvation Army doing local pick ups.. 12/hr 40/hr week plus option overtime on saturdays. They also will be having a CDL job opening up here in the next 6 months which pays 15/hr. Im excited. I'm heading back to the terminal in Lathrop, CA tomorrow from LA. I can't wait to start this new path and being home with my family. WOOOO HOOO!!! dancing-banana.gifdancing-banana.gifdancing-banana.gifdancing-banana.gifdancing-banana.gifdancing-banana.gif

Have you looked into any LTL companies in Santa Rosa? I know ABF, YRC and conway Freight have terminals there. You will make a lot more than 12 dollars an hour at any of those

Local Truck Driving With No Experience

A few LTL companies hire with no experience, such as conway freight and YRC. It boils down to how badly they need drivers, timing and a little luck. Apply for local positions even if the job posting says 6-12 months experience. I got hired on as a P/D City Driver after nine months with Schneider, best decision I ever made
