What makes local truck driving so appealing to drivers VS Over the road?

I am a recruiter in the trucking industry. I am NOT on here to recruit people. I am on here to gain knowledge and to understand truckers. I want to understand the mentality of truck driver. I also want to understand the Industry. I am looking for the truth no matter how bad or how good that maybe. Any information you can give to help me better understand would be incredibly helpful.
