Mom of 3 under 5

I understand where you are coming from. Someone else mentioned driving school buses I didn’t know you had to a cdl for that and that is an option because 2 out of 3 are in school. Also It’s how my mom raised us she isn’t the best person alive and always negative things to say or do and at this point I just really want to provide for children my older 2 father left me in $3000 worth of and I’m a domestic violence survivor as well as child hood abuse survivor I want to give my children the world although my husband is amazing and tries to give us the world I still have a lot that I deal with when it comes to the men in my life. I see why otr cdl isn’t god right and the risks my husband would have if he was to teach me things in his personal or work truck. I will look into more options like driving for the school here or the city. Thank you so all so much!!!!!

It's a shame that you feel like you have to do this because you don't have security in your marriage. Not a good way to live. I would sit down and discuss this topic with your husband. No one is saying you should depend on him, but it sounds like you're bracing for impact.

I did OTR and now I drive locally so I know both sides. First things first, $17 an hour to drive a Class A truck is terrible pay. I would rather work at a warehouse with predictable days and hours.

I do local and while my start time is the same everyday, the time I get off is not. I could get off as early as 4pm, or as late as 8:30pm. This would create a nightmare for planning with your daycare person.

I would focus on taking care of the kids and supporting the husband as he builds his career. He will eventually make enough to support you all but it won't be in that first year.

I think ultimately the hurdle we need to focus on is what appears to be your lack of confidence with you two staying together. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. And I would use my energy to gain that confidence back somehow so that you don't feel obligated to abandon the kids and seek out additional income "just in case".

We are trying to set a stable environment for our children but I was never raised to sit back and let a man handle the income because any day anything can happen and that man can leave them I’m up ****s creek because I depended on his income I understand driving from one side to the next isn’t much experience but it’s still a decent paycheck to maintain bills or save for a rainy especially when my state minimum wage is 7.50 and $17 is a lot better I alone would bring in 2720 before taxes which would maintain my household in the case something happens. Also I definitely understand what you all are saying but I can’t depend on someone else only myself and my kids depend on me whether their father is in the picture or not. Childcare here I can more than likely get a voucher for my older two because they have a different dad. Which will cover them completely and I wasn’t going to drive his company truck he is working towards his own truck. And if it comes down to it we have a technical college that offers cdl where I can take courses.

Thank you all for your feed back my husband have sat down and talked we have decided that he will start OTR driving and when I have the time he will teach me and I will take my test at the dmv for my cal and I will drive locally a basic 9-5 here in town and find a babysitter. We feel this is best for our family because our kids need me as mom at home we definitely took all of your statements into consideration and realized what was best for us. Thank you all for your honesty and truthfulness about the situation. Have a good week stay safe and get your rest when needed you all are very important to us and wish you all safety on the road and while going through this gas shortage!!!!😇😇😀😀😀

I agree with Old School. I started locally and had some moments where luck you through me a situation more than skill. I learned from those moments and I improved.

Local trucking jobs, more often than not, are built on seniority. That means the best schedules will be taken by those with more seniority. At FedEx freight, I worked nights. The guys with seniority that have the 9 AM start times get back at around 7pm and clock out close to 8. At pepsi, my start time was anywhere from 4AM to 6 AM, depending on what route I was doing and on a light day, I would work 10 hours.

If you can find a 9-5 trucking job, I'd be surprised. If you don't believe us, go on indeed and in the search bar put local CDL jobs. They'll usually put the hours you're expected to work and how much experience they require.

I guarantee you won't see anything that says 9-5, no experience required.

So where I live we have plants who need cdl drivers to move loads from one side of the plant to the other and I wasn’t stating the hour would be 9-5 exactly but it will be a day to day job not otr. With this being said they do allow you to start off with your cdl from the dmv and they give you more on the job training. This is considered local here and the pay is $17 an hour I worked for this plant for 3 years before working from home due to the pandemic and 2 of my pregnancies so I also know the schedule is 6:30 am -4:30 pm the idea stated for 9-5 did not actually mean the hours of 9-5 I will also only work Monday-Friday and will only have to open and close the gate because the fork lift will remove the items out of the trailer. Thank you so much for your feed back.
