Frank J.'s Bio

I am currently in the Air Force and will be retiring in December! I have been thinking about driving truck as my new career and leaning heavy that way. I have driven straight trucks part-time delivering for one of the big box hardware store companies and enjoyed that for the most part so why not go big!

I am looking for any advice from experienced drivers on what companies to look at first. I am willing to do OTR, regional, local, etc.

I am also looking for advice on trucking schools. I have my Post 911 GI Bill to pay for school, or from what I have started learning some companies have a "Veteran Apprentice" program that will allow me to use my GI Bill to provide additional income. What companies offer that, and who would ya'll recommend?

Day 4

Had a couple recruiters come in today. Interesting to listen to what they have to offer and about their companies. More are coming tomorrow as well. Anyway today was a decent day although still more in class videos and power points. Got up early and studied the PTI and will do more again this evening. I want to pass that as quickly as possible so I can get on to the maneuvers and road time.

Well, have a blessed evening ya'll.

Today was day three. Day two and today were more of the same powerpoint and video instruction. The class is opening up more and asking more questions. I would like to say they were all valid questions but that would make me a liar. LOL We have some pretty young kids in the class so I understand that. I have started working on a checklist for my pre trip and its coming along well. This will be my way of practicing. I will have someone listen to me walking thru the pre-trip and check off things I mention correctly. Hopefully it will help solidify the process for me!

Well, I am going to get back to my studies, I will post more in a couple days.

God bless to all my fellow students and drivers everywhere!

What school or company training are you attending?

Good luck with the process.

I am attending Great Lakes Truck Driving School. Thanks for asking.

Today was day one...One LONG day in books and PowerPoint. I have to say that our instructor thus far has not impressed me much. He is a nice enough guy, but he seems to embellish a bit and some of the comments he makes seem downright to be lies or made up. He makes himself look a bit slow if you know what I mean. Hopefully tomorrow will be of more substance and worthwhile.

For now, I am going to get in some study time with the PTI on here! I love the PTI study guide on this website.

CRST Expedited Trucking School and training program Cedar Rapids, IA. A (re) training diary by millionmiler24

Million, I started reading your diary today and its excellent! Thank you. Out of curiosity does the DOT driving test include all versions of backing when you test?

Thanks, Frank

06/21/2017:

After lunch, I got onto the Backing range and did a PERFECT Straight line back and NAILED an offset back for the first time in 2+ yrs. That really made me feel great. I didn't get to do the DREADED 90 today, however I sure hope to get to attempt it again tomorrow.
