Proud owner of a new CDL and off to orientation with McElory Truck Lines

Good Company McELroy is. Got accepted a while back but didn't pass the 2nd day agility test. Last thing on the test was to lift 70lbs in a box shoulder height and outwards. Couldn't do it (found out shoulder weakness). Re habbing it now and hope to get back with them by the summer. Very forward and no B.S. . Good joice.

Driving record

Depends everything in driver violations will show up on your record. Had speeding back in 79 and early 80's that showed up.When the recruiter asked me I simply told him 19 /20 years old who wasn't a speed demon with a 455 motor. Been LOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNGGGG TIME AGO SO. IT SHOULDN'T MATTER. Varies by company just be honest. best policy.

Floating Gears

I myself had a very hard time double clutching during driving school. Cost me at my first road test. Kept at it and finally passed with double clutching.Once I started at the trucking company the trainer taught me to float first night. Told me that I would wear out my knee in the city double clutching. I will admit I will mix them up on occasion just to keep trained on the dble clutch. Never know when I will need it. LOL

Im a nervous mess right now HELP!!

Take a deep breath relax. It took me 4 times to pass and 2 of those were pretty simple mistakes to make on the driving rangs. Ran over cones (never did in school) brake test told the guy what I was doing while doing it (failed). Missed a gear going around a corner (big one there). Fourth time was a charm.Instructor told me to take ten deep breaths. and let's get this done. Biggest problem Shifting now. Just down shifting. Learning the float method now with trainer.

Notes for Newbies 10-24-15

Very good notes and helpful. At 53 years old I took the leap and decided to change jobs. Driving a truck is what I told people I'd be doing when leaving my last company. Scary YES but been reading as much as possible to get ready fro the new adventure in life.
