Prospective Driver in KY

Greetings folks, the name is John, I'm seriously considering becoming a driver. I have a good friend that has been on the road a year or so, and he has pretty much convinced me that this is something I should give some serious thought. I've driven larger vehicles in the military, but never anything like a tractor/trailer combo. I'm from Michigan, living in Northern Kentucky. I'm trying to find a good program as far as training is concerned, and have spoken with Quality out of Indianapolis. My buddy recommended TMC, but I haven't contacted them yet. I have a few questions, and if these can all be answered elsewhere on the forum, please just let me know!

-Are these 'free' CDL training offers all the same? -Are there any that will cover your physicals and permit testing? -Are there any companies that prefer hiring veterans?
