Greetings folks, the name is John, I'm seriously considering becoming a driver. I have a good friend that has been on the road a year or so, and he has pretty much convinced me that this is something I should give some serious thought. I've driven larger vehicles in the military, but never anything like a tractor/trailer combo. I'm from Michigan, living in Northern Kentucky. I'm trying to find a good program as far as training is concerned, and have spoken with Quality out of Indianapolis. My buddy recommended TMC, but I haven't contacted them yet. I have a few questions, and if these can all be answered elsewhere on the forum, please just let me know!

-Are these 'free' CDL training offers all the same? -Are there any that will cover your physicals and permit testing? -Are there any companies that prefer hiring veterans?

Thank you in advance, and hopefully I'll be able to join your ranks soon!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

#1. "Free" am in no tuition money out of pocket. You are expected to hire on with that company, and they'll deduct the tuition from your pay. Are they the "same"? Yes, just like pork and beans are the same from Campbell's, Van Camp, Del Monte and Bush's.

#2. License and physical fees: these are generally on you, up front. Cash.

#3. "Prefer" vets: (I'm a V-N vet) You know vets have a better idea of "what's going on" than non-vets. I know Swift had a deal where they get vets a "scholarship" for tuition. You just give them a year of driving. (you are planning to drive s truck, right?) And you're paid normally - no deduction for the year.

There are other veteran programs, and VA tuition assistance, but for me my entitlements evaporated long ago.
