I feel you! Yes, that's what it all boils down to. Do whatever it takes to get that confidence boost & ace this.

Sidenote: I was just reading your diary & saw that you flew rather than taking the "dirty dog". Good choice. If you haven't done so already, make your recruiter aware cause Prime will reimburse you for the price of the bus ticket when you finish TNT & upgrade to A-seat. Just follow up with your recruiter at that time also.

Repetition repetition repetition repetition.

Seriously, do it over and over again repeatedly. Find your pattern, start from the same place every time, like front to back, left to right, rinse, repeat.

I must have done the pre-trip a couple hundred times during orientation and PSD. No exaggeration. They even nicknamed me "pretrip". By the time I took the exam, I could do it in my sleep.

Admittedly, all of my PSD was spent in house at Sprimo so I had lots of time to practice.

You'll get it pal. Don't sweat it.

Thanks turtle I've been doing it hundreds of times, and I really do have it memorized, it's just the act of speaking and being verbally tested, I've always had a public speaking issue. I'll figure it out and I WILL succeed somehow, thank you very much for your help.

Hey Michael, I had your issue but on the opposite side of testing. I aced the pretrip cause I followed the same sequence every single time. Muscle memory. I wrote the speeches over & over again until it just flowed.

Where I got knots in my stomach was on the backing & the road test. I failed each twice so I had my back up against the wall both times. I just had no other option but to pass or go home. I was 55 years old at the time & hadn't needed to prove myself since my teenage years. That was huge for me. Failing taught me humility & perseverance.

I guess the best advice I could give you is to keep repeating it with your trainer present. Over & over until you get past this.

I memorized the sequences by connecting the components. Sort of like this bone is connected to that bone. The speeches also follow a sequence so it's about doing it with an authority figure in your face every time until you mentally get past it.

This just came to me, when you do it alone, do you say the words out loud? If you do, do you listen to your words? What I mean is, are you saying them robotically or are you projecting your voice from a place of authority? Saying them for the world to hear rather than the person standing next to you. My examiner stood well enough back so I just followed my routine & said it for the world to hear. Good luck!

Prime CDL Training

Thanks Splitter!

A pull through spot should be easy, correct? Not when it’s me doing it. Ha! Last night we were in a very packed Petro and I spotted a pull through so I line up for it and head it. However, I didn’t set up correctly and the trailer was heading straight for the next guy’s mirror. The guy isn’t in his truck so he can’t help. A flat bed was in the spot on the other side of me and it was pretty close. I’m pretty wedged in there, my tractor is about 3 inches from the flatbed and the trailer is about 1/2 inch from the other truck’s mirror. I’m getting nervous. My trainer is getting nervous. She said we need the rear of the trailer to swing around. So, I cut the wheel all the way to the right and crept forward as slow as I could. Lo and behold the trailer was at the perfect pivot point and swung perfectly!! I slid in the rest of the way with very little room to spare. Whew!!

Once I was parked I just sat there with my head on the steering wheel for a while. LOL

The lesson I learned there was that I will always make sure I have enough room to swing wide enough to get into a pull through.

This lesson is especially true for the pumps at the Sapp Bros in Council Bluffs, IA. When I was with my PSD trainer & he saw me going for the wrong pump (due to my lack of proper setup), he nearly jumped off his seat. He saved me from a horrible ugly accident.

Another time during TNT, I did a pull through at the Russell’s Truck Stop/ cool as heck museum in Glenrio, NM that not only was way too close for comfort but my ego didn’t let me back out of it. Thankfully I didn’t hit anyone or anything but I gained a considerable amount of gray hair & few less years of life. Lol

So long as you keep check those mirrors, you’re good to go. The two accidents I had since going solo (1st: damaged the nose clip on a lease ops truck at Pripit & 2nd: I scraped a truck’s deer guard at a tight pilot in upstate NY) occurred because I didn’t keep checking my mirrors. The worst part is the both were on the driver’s side & both were during my setting up for a back.

Backing

We arrived in California a day early so we been in Barstow all day. I spent the entire afternoon backing from one parking space to another at the pilot. At the end of the day came over to flying j and parked in about the last spot. I actually can do this. Is it pretty ( no) it might take me 15 minutes but, it’s straight. I feel 100% better.

Starting orientation

I think while you are on your trainers truck it is best to underpack! You wont be on it long and everything you bring with you is both weight and volume. All that volume is sleeping on your bunk with you cause theres no place to put it. 3-4 changes of clothes is plenty plus coat, bedding and toiletries. You dont even need a towel cause the showers are provided with towel and washrag. The trainer will generally have the everyday items needed for life on the road and usually willing to help you out. If you desperately need something you can always pick it up at a walmart/truck stop. Once you get your own truck go ahead and stock it like you want it. One duffel bag and a backpack to take in to shower is fine. Tidepods and quarters. Any liquids you bring (shampoo, bodywash, tidepods etc.) I recommend you ziplock baggie them in case of leakage. Good luck and be safe!!!

I’d still pack a towel for two reasons.

1) Some of the towels, I was left to use, stunk. Just plain nasty.

2) The rest areas in OH have free showers but no towels.

If you get a trainer like my PSD trainer? Then you’ll need more than 3-4 days of clothes. I had a duffle bag with wheels in my bunk with 2-3 weeks of clothes. Let’s just say that he wasn’t the most hygienic trainer but I’ve heard of worse. I’m only 5’ 7” so it didn’t get in my way at the end of my bunk.

In terms of boots, since it’s winter, I’d consider a pair of waterproof & insulated boots. I just got a pair of Merrell’s & they get the job done. I’d also consider rain gear. I got a frog togg’s set for $15-$20 at Walmart . Used it countless times.

Ziplocks for liquids is absolutely mandatory. Learned it the hard way. The pressure from elevation changes pushed out half a bottle of shampoo.

Upgrading

Soon after getting my solo truck, I quickly realized I needed more places to put my stuff. With my wife being with me, that was extra important. So I got a bunch of hook thingys from Walmart for jackets, bags, etc. They really come in handy for those oddball things that need to go somewhere. And they can be placed in otherwise useless spaces. Think "space management ".

Upgrading

Ditch the microwave. I just read that they kill all the nutrients in your food therefore you’ll be eating carcinogens. I tried the crockpot too but it took an hour to heat my soup. I returned it for an electric skillet/pot. It heated my soup in 5 mns. I’ll include a pic at the bottom.

At the various Iowa 80 locations they sell a plastic version of the boot brush. This is a must have on your steps.

The fridge they sell at the company store is very good & it costs about $225. My Walmart dorm fridge did something weird the other day. I was parked on a slope & the truck leaned right. Apparently the gas was not level & the left side of it got really hot!

Blanket!! The organizer that hangs behind the seat.

Just read your last response. Yes. All that bull crap he spewed is all wrong. There are no timers, no fines for backing times, driving at night doesn’t help you, not flipping your driving times according to load appt times doesn’t help you, I could go on & on.

I’d go back & report him ASAP! How many other rookies bailed due to his horrible attitude & lack of training etiquette.

Seeking Advice About Backing

Dan S. welcome to Prime & sorry for your experience with your trainer. I was trained by Rainy, a moderator on here. We went to truck stop & she helped me figure out the basics of how to back. It was a completely empty lot of a truck stop & everything was easy cause there was no obstructions, no truckers wanting me to hurry, etc.

After that, I had to back by myself at every shipper & receiver. She never got out to guide me or even spot me on the blindside. I had to GOAL every time I wasn’t sure & I still do. Just had to GOAL 4X to drop my empty at this shipper.

I’m saying all this to say that you should absolutely go back to Sprimo, ask for backing practice for about a week if you can afford it & get your truck & get out here to learn on your own.

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT lease!! I’m guessing you had a lease op for trainer & that would explain why it went as it did.

Paid CDL Training Prime vs. Roehl

I don’t know the policy at other company paid training programs but at Prime you have two options depending on which facility you train at. Because you’re on the west coast, chances are you’ll be training at the Salt Lake City terminal. There you’ll have to take & pass your CLP in your home state. So to answer your question about whether you can do both at the same time? No, since you’ll have to come in with your CLP first, receive your training, then pass your CDL in Utah.

I would confirm this with your recruiter first. I did my training at the Springfield, MO terminal & that program is completely different. You’ll be taking your CLP at Springfield & be testing for your CDL there also. Once you pass your CDL, you’ll then go to your home state & transfer your license at their licensing department.

I’ve spent my morning reading your thread. There has been a wealth of information. I’ve been considering obtaining my CDL for some time but have a specific time table for when I’d make the jump (spring or summer ‘19). I’m also leaning towards Prime because I like their length of training, their training pay, and contract. Until next year, I’ll continue to read everyone’s personal experiences and study for the CDL.
