There is a product called Insta-Chain where chains are available with a flick of a switch. They are approved for OTR trucks according to their website. I have used them when I was active with the local volunteer fire dept. and they work great. While I realize that the large carriers would never go to the expense, they could be a viable option for small fleets and O/Os. It must be a real treat to have to get out and chain up in those extreme conditions, and flicking a switch has more appeal to me!

Thanks for the welcomes! With regards to the buses following the truck speed limit question, the technical answer is no. The states I run do not have separate speed limits for trucks, except on grades. I tend to drive close to the posted truck speed limit in these cases in the name of safety. Even if I feel confident and comfortable at my speed, I have up to 56 passengers to consider.

Long time follower of forum and thought I'd finally register. Currently driving motor coach in the northeast and could contribute to the occasional questions regarding the bus industry and such, as well as continue to learn from you folks. Although my job is different than yours, we do share many of the same challenges(HOS, DOT, logging, directions, and traffic to name a few). Its refreshing to come across a forum such as this where everyone is so helpful, unlike some others out there.
