Hello everyone! I just wanted to say that TT is the best most informative and helpful website for the trucking industry. I have been considering a career change for about two years now and trucking was at the top of my list. I am a Navy vet. After I was honorably discharged in 1998 I came back home to work in my family's restaurant business. I am third generation owner. But business has slowly been declining and I am ready to get out and make a change. The restaurant is seasonal. So I take a break Nov-March. Last Feb after much discussion with the wifey I looked into schooling for CDL. There are a number of private schools around and plenty of company's offering training. I made an appointment at SAGE trucking school in Lebanon Pa. They were very informative and suggested this website. Soooooooo happy about that!!!! I've been studying the high road since. Now I wasn't ready to commit at that time. My time off was getting short and I had to put my energy into opening for the season and prepare my self for another 9 months of 100+ hour weeks. The 2015 season was terrible for me at the store. Bad biz. Break downs. Terrible employees. I am just over it. About mid July I made up my mind and had the support of my family. Especially my wife and kids. So I put the business on the market and was looking for schooling. I definitely knew I wanted private school. So in my search I read an article in the local paper about how the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center had received a grant from the Feds to provide free training for Vets. I called and applied right away. I began school on Dec 7. What an awesome time I am having!!! Passed my permit test no problem and they had me on the road the same day!! I am a pretty quick learner and have since mastered the backing skills and am pretty confident with the pre-trip and brake test. Scheduled to test out on Jan 19. I have pretty much read the whole forum and truly enjoy all the conversations. Daniel B's play by play about this daily life was awesome!! Thank you for that!! And all the talk about flatbed has convinced me that is where I will fit in the best. In closing thank you to Brett for the is awesome resource!! Thank you to all who contribute and comment. Good luck to all those in school and safe travels to everyone. Out.
