Trucking slowdown, hopefully just a market correction

I would say from a company driver perspective you have little or nothing to worry about, especially if you go to work for one of the major carriers. Trucking always has fairly large fluctuations in demand and pricing but there's no such thing as a time that a company driver at a major company can't make a solid living.

Even in late 2008 and into 2009 when the economy hit a brick wall most trucking companies were hiring just the same. We had tons of drivers coming through the website that got their career underway during that time and they were able to turn the miles and make good money in spite of economic conditions.

Now if someone is working for a company with five trucks then I have no idea how this will play out. Small companies obviously don't have the financial backing and flexibility that the large companies have to absorb losses and scale back their fleet sizes. So things can be more volatile for smaller companies.

Thanks Brett, helps me feel a whole lot better... I know very little of this business yet and know it has its ups and downs but I guess no matter what happens the goods have got to move.

Now that I am retiring and getting my CDL this happens, hopefully a recession is not on the horizon.

Not so convenient parking at night

If you want good pepper spray get a a brand that a lot of LEO agencies use such as Freeze Plus P. Pepper sprays are rated by their heat rating on the Scoville heat scale (Goes up to 2 million) and many of the ones you buy at Wal Mart etc are only rated around 50-100,000. Freeze Plus P is as hot as you can get at 2 million on the scale and you can buy it for about 20 bucks on Amazon. Buy the one that delivers in a stream and not a spray, its more effective.

Swift

At this point, I keep changing my mind, how long do you have to go OTR as a rookie before you can get some type of dedicated account with this company. The reason I am asking is because Swifts has a Wal Mart DC about 10 miles from my house that they service. I would enjoy OTR for a while but would like to eventually get something more regional or dedicated. Does anyone know about the new Swift Training School in Memphis..any insights? I see a lot of Swift bashing on other sites but I have a friend thats been with them almost a year and seems to be ok happy there. Thanks.

Starting new career with Millis Transfer.

How is it going at Millis? I am considering them as well. Do you get the physical before you get there and another one when you arrive at training? What do I need to have for training besides the physical??..a Drivers permit..anything else? I live in Alabama and assume I would also attend the Cartersville location. I would not mind doing national for a while but would eventually like to be SE regional.

Mark mc Looks like a sign from above you should stick with your decision to leave. Hope Millis goes well, thought about them but I hear they have driver facing cams and am not crazy about that. I turned in my notice at a long career this year and changed my mind two days later and decided to stay, now wishing I had not. I am within days of turning it in again and like you am about ready to pull the trigger on something I started to do 25 years ago before the career. Good luck!!

Documentary

This is an excellent documentary. I did it for a while and did lose some weight, like any "diet" its not real easy to stick with but it does work. What the documentary does not show you is it does take some time to juice..the preparation, cleanup etc. is a bit time consuming. Seems like it might be a little difficult to do on the road but I guess it could be done. It also gets a little expensive. I usually stick with the mean green juice which I think is quite tasty, celery, ginger, lemons, kale, sometimes spinach mixed in, green apples, and sometimes cucumber.
