Looking for a change!!

Thank you for your service! Go Buckeyes!

Little bit about myself...I'm 34, served in the Army for 11 years (deployed twice to Iraq) and have associates degree in Computer science. My father was a driver so I have a basic understanding of the life style.

I'm honestly looking to do something different with my life. I want to get out of Ohio but not permanently. I have a 14 year old Autistic son. Driving a truck seemed to be a natural fit. I can see the country but also get home to him every few weeks. His mother and I are divorced and he's honestly the only thing keeping me here.

Anyway...I'm looking for personal experiences with training companies. Prime, PAM and CRST seem to be the best options from training, hire and career. I've read a ton off this site already and scanned the forums as well.

Very important is a rider policy that will allow me to take him with me on occasion.

I got my cdl back in November. I went to transport america out of school but I have decided I'm looking for more of a challenge. any ideas? by the way I should mention I'm 21 so I know some companies aren't doable. thanks

You are listed as living in Ohio. Try PGT Trucking out of Monaca PA. Very good company.

Food Grade Tanker

Well I am finding some difficulty getting back into the industry since I have been out since 2013. There are some companies that can't bring me on due to not being able to be covered by the insurance company since I haven't driven in the last year. So I will have less companies to try for. I'm hoping Carry Transit will bring me on. I may hear something within the next couple of weeks. They want to bring someone on by the first of April. If Melton brings me on I would have to go out with a trainer for two weeks, no big deal, wouldn't hurt. Cypress wants me to go through their refresher and then be obligated for 12 months. Indian River said no because I don't have the year of driving in the last three. My choices are already limited because I live in the sunshine state, but it'll work out one way or the other. Just keeping you good folks updated, and hoping to make some friends as well. Life is all about relationships.

I think Prime has food grade.

You're right. I know about them and forgot to list them. Thank you. If I don't do food grade grade, I'm also looking into fuel hauling. My experience is in food grade tanker and flatbed. I haven't seen anyone here talk about fuel hauling or companies.

Good morning TT. Can you good people provide names of food grade tank companies besides the ones on this list please? Preferably that hire out of Florida. I can't find anymore...

Good training Company after grad

So very true. That is one of the reasons that I'm glad I discovered this site.

Hey Michael, I see you actually joined quite a while ago, but just started posting. Glad to have you on the forum. Don't be alarmed by these negative reviews elsewhere on the internet. You stick around here long enough, and you'll see that the so-called "bad"companies are really just a reflection of a poor perspective from drivers that spread misinformation, disinformation, and just general slander and malice. Personally, I do frequent other trucking forums on the web, but you have to approach them with a grain of salt. Other forums can be a breeding ground for general discontent and **** poor attitudes.

This forum and website was created with the intention to get the truth out there in regard to the trucking industry, specifically how to be successful in an industry that is rampant with negativity. When I started researching trucking a few years back, this website helped me tremendously, especially in regard to correcting my view on an industry that receives a bad rap from not only the media but truck drivers who are caught in that perpetual cycle of blaming their failures on an "evil" company. This website was a breath of fresh air to me and my wife, and re-confirmed our thoughts that trucking actually was a great way to make a living for our family. Indeed it is!

So again, what interests do you have? Give me some specifics, and maybe I can point you in the right direction. I'm from PA too, and am familiar with the opportunities that we have in the Keystone State.

KLLM, Western Express, Roehl, CR England: Best Shaking The Rust off Option

Hey Bigwheel, how‘s it going? I see that you're in Florida. Are you limiting yourself to those companies listed? If not, Cypress Truck Lines out of Jacksonville FL will put you through the 160 hr refresher, then out with a trainer.

Thanks Kris! Yeah Old School, they seem to be from their website and talking with the recruiter. If anyone knows a driver from Melton, Cypress, and the Florida food grade tank companies...I would appreciate being put in touch with them if they're willing to chat. Also if anyone has any info on the fuel companies in central Florida.

Hey Razorback, check out Cypress - they are a flat-bed company out of Florida and they are an over the road outfit. I see them all over the place - they do a lot of sheetrock loads. One of the nice things about those sheetrock loads is that often times you are picking up a pre-loaded trailer that is already tarped for you.

Ok cool. I have called them. They require that I go through their 160 hr refresher course. They are advertising regional, home every weekend, which means sometimes only a 34 or less and sometimes 48 or a little more. I would like to speak with an actual driver or 3, ha ha ha. I've also talked with Melton. No 160 hr refresher, but I may have to go out with a trainer for a couple of weeks, which wouldn't be a big deal. According to Melton they pay .48 c loaded and empty.

I live in Florida, which we all know is kind of crappy for a truck driver as far as companies that will hire. I've been out for a little while, so I probably will solicit help/information from you all as this is an every changing industry. I am gathering information on the food grade tanker companies here as that is what I pulled before. Also flatbed companies that will hire out of Florida. Lastly some of the fuel hauling companies here.

I'm new here, and have been lurking around for a few days. I can say that I have enjoyed what I have been reading so far. Also that it seems that the people here are genuine and eager to help. A far cry from some of the negative content on some other forums. I have prior experience in flatbed and tanker, and may be getting back in the industry. Have a great evening everyone :)
