Chris K.'s Bio

I worked as a chef for 18 years and in 2004 I was laid off for the winter season. I on a whim went to driving school. I drove for Stevens Transport and Cooke Trucking(Mt. Airy, NC). I drove for about a year. I was on a break and a buddy of mine needed a chef so I returned to cooking. Like a dumb ass I didn't renew my Cdl. I am currently starting the process of training again.

Needing advice on trucking companies

There are a few smaller companies that offer training such as online transport or RE West. I believe they both pay during training, Re West definitely does. Of course where you are located may be an issue w these two. I would go w Swift over PAM personal opinion!🤔

Help me wrap my head around the decision to become a truck driver

thank-you.gif Ronnie Milsap, now that's a memory. And my two cents...give it a shot! I drove ten years ago and couldn't really decide whether I liked it or not, so I went back into restaurant business. And I let my Cdl lapse, so obviously I have to start from scratch. I really want to drive again but people in my life are making it difficult. I'm so burnt on the restaurant business. Pay is pitiful 15$ hr if you are lucky. If I want to put in 70+ hrs on my feet etc I could probably pull down 50,000$. Just do it!

I can't believe this.

Keep that positive attitude man! Best of luck! Keep your head high even if next month is rough." It's nature of the business, it's the smugglers blues".

Recent CDL graduate of Alabama. Looking for a decent company.

I do not know if they hire from Alabama but Epes Transport out of Greensboro Nc hired recent grads (if your school is approved) and say they get you home every 5-7 days

I feel so dumb

I will make you feel better. On my first 34 hr reset I was at truck stop getting ready to head out. Started truck and released brakes(apparently) and the went into sleeper for something. Truck slowly rolled prob 300 feet into field luckily not hitting a damn thing. As I was leaving about 20 plus truckers were coming out of there trucks w a round of wonderful sarcastic applause. Thank god I left CB off. And this ladies and gentlemen is the first time this gem of a story has been released to the public right here live on trucking truth.embarrassed.gifrofl-1.gif

Be prepared for some real "characters" when you get to orientation in Dallas. Keep your chin up and plow thru it. You will love it when you get that nice shiny truck.

Fair pay?

This sounds like CR England, and if it is you will be getting regular raises fairly frequently. It's just how their contract works. It is front loaded to their advantage because they got tired of training their competition's drivers. This way they get most of their training money back before the job hoppers have a chance to hop.

Or from another post PAM in your first 6 months w trainer!

This is very tough decision!

Seriously take a look at Millis. School is near you in Eden(I'm to assume you are in NC). Old Rookie just updated his training diary int that forum.

They sell tests at cvs and Walgreens. To at least give you an idea. I wouldn't put a lot of faith in them.
