Jim Palmer Trucking based in Montana

Anything new..Guessing you are either out on your own NOW or should be fairly soon. I am looking at coming to JPT soon as well

For anyone paying attention to this still, I'm actually in Montana right now with Jim Palmer going through my first week getting my CDL. I got the permit for Montana yesterday and when we got back to the terminal I was in a truck doing laps around the yard to learn to shift. After that the trainer drove us to a truck stop outside of Missoula and we did laps around the parking area, then had lunch and I ended up driving the truck back. This was all bobtail, we came back to the yard got the trailer and drove some more.

When I applied to Jim Palmer I had already done my home work, I spent a couple of months researching, weighing pros and cons, then started wrapping stuff up at home so I could do it. Then I came across Allie and Valerie's stuff, and applied with Palmer after applying a couple of other places. The application process took a couple of weeks, they verified references, verified employment. They are a subsidiary of Wil-Trans and Wil-Trans is part of Prime's Advanced Fleet Program.

The training program and pay is very much the same as Prime's because when I asked about the similarities the short answer was "What Prime is doing works." And I believe that since I applied there too.

Right now I'm getting the 1 on 1 treatment from the get go. Out of the applications they had the phone interviews and checks they did I'm the only student this week. This may not be the case but I lucked out big time. Everyone here has been so friendly and have gone out of their way to make me feel welcome. They put your name on a sign at the front door to welcome you your first day.

I've met nearly everyone in the building including the owner, and I don't have any complaints right now. If the company is this good at the door I don't think I'm going to leave any time soon.

They are trying to get more people in the door but they don't mind being choosy about it, every driver Palmer brings in is a risky investment for the company because it's unsure if the prospect is going to stay in this day and age.

I guess I lucked out, I'm going through the full program with them and yes you do have to sign the one year contract. I'm from Texas originally and this was a major life change for me especially in employment lol.

If you are interested in Jim Palmer continue talking to the recruiters, they aren't blowing smoke the company is doing good with what they have now but they do want to grow but don't mind growing slowly, and Haley is a good recruiter, first time she met me she handed me her card and let me know call day or night if I ever needed help with ANYTHING.

If theres any questions I can try to reply as I go through the program. I'm in Missoula till the end of the week then I'm going OTR for a bit with an instructor so I can come back and pass my CDL exam.

Hope this helps someone out.

Hey Ladies

The act of systematic and/or continued unwanted and annoying actions of one party or a group, including threats and demands. The purposes may vary, including racial prejudice, personal malice, an attempt to force someone to quit a job or grant sexual favors, apply illegal pressure to collect a bill, or merely gain sadistic pleasure from making someone fearful or anxious. Such activities may be the basis for a lawsuit if due to discrimination based on race or sex, a violation on the statutory limitations on collection agencies, involve revenge by an ex-spouse, or be shown to be a form of blackmail ("I'll stop bothering you, if you'll go to bed with me"). The victim may file a petition for a "stay away" (restraining) order, intended to prevent contact by the offensive party. A systematic pattern of harassment by an employee against another worker may subject the employer to a lawsuit for failure to protect the worker. (See: harass, sexual harassment)

Recently, survived the school process, getting the Class A, riding with a trainer that should never be allowed to train women for 2 months and first couple of months as a team driver.

It seems like there are more women coming out of the schools now but not really remaining with my company. Just be aware that you have to really commit to getting through the process. Don't give up on yourself and certainly don't let anyone make you quit! You can do it. You WILL learn this new job. Don't let yourself get into unsafe situations either professionally or personally. I advise dressing comfortably yet conservative (not provocative) if you want to be treated respectfully. Of course you can still be girly but dress for the results you expect.

My biggest suggestion is help a sister out when it looks like she might need help. I was amazed at some of the gals out here not willing to step up when their sisters were being crushed by the process or the harassment that is unfortunately pretty frequent out here. If you see someone close to tears time to step up. Help keep women out there.

Now for the good stuff. . .this country is beautiful! I can't believe the view from my 'office' window. My commute to work is really short, although I have stubbed my toe on the driver's seat once on my way to work. Every day is new experiences, new people and new places.

Good luck and enjoy!

Double Clutching

Repeat this Clutch to neutral Clutch to gear Clutch to neutral Clutch to gear Clutch to neutral Clutch to gear Clutch to neutral Clutch to gear Clutch to neutral Clutch to gear. You mentioned "Reving" the Engine we guess you mean when down shifting? Most trucks I believe is about 500 RPM, you need to watch your Tach If you are driving in let's say 10th gear and you want to down shift to 9th, Look at your Tachometer what ever it is when you Clutch to Neutral add 500 so if you are running at say 1100 RPM when you go into neutral, slightly press the accelerator until you get to 1600 RPM and push the clutch in and should slide right in. Kind of a 2 part QUICK process, soon as you get to the right RPM you got to be moving the clutch pedal and shifter. JUST TAKES PRACTICE. Don't get frustrated with it. Remember in a car it has an AUTO syncronizer in it so just pushing the clutch pedal in lines everything up...In the big rig YOUR are the syncronizer. Also remember when shifting DON'T Push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor or you will engage the clutch brake and have bigger issues, you should only have to push the pedal about an inch or so before it engages. Practice a couple times sitting still to see how far to press it. Clutch to neutral Clutch to gear Clutch to neutral Clutch to gear Clutch to neutral Clutch to gear Clutch to neutral Clutch to gear It is mostly Muscle Memory and once you do it several times you will get it. I went to a school where we drove around the "range" for a day bobtailing, learning up shifting and down shifting, day 2 and 3 we hooked a 53' up and drove around the range that way as well. Day 4 we through about 30,000 of weight in the trailer and hit the road. Our FIRST "Road Day" each of us drove almost 80 miles. By the time I was done with class I had well over 500 miles already. I live in Cincinnati ohio area so we would leave school, drive to Lexington, over to Louisville, North to Indianapolis and then back east to school. Every day each student was averaging about 100 miles a day driving.

PRACTICE PRACTICE....BREATHE Soon you will look back and say to your self....Man that was EASY Clutch to neutral Clutch to gear

Hi,

I'm new, can anyone help with Double Clutching. I just can't seem to get the rhythm. There is so much to concentrate on when your behind the wheel with a long trailer. Today I came home so upset that I told my husband I wanted to quit. I did 3 miles in the truck yesterday and 4 today after being so frazzled by my instructor yelling at me to revved the engine but didn't bother to tell me up to how many rpm's or the best one is him telling me to make a right turn when I'm already in the center of the road. I guess he thinks a newbie can read his mind. JoAnn

Being forced to wear a CPAP device?

Just did my sleep study (Voluntarily) last Thursday. Will get results in 2 weeks, but from what they where telling me they where on high alert the whole time I was in there lol...Good Times... Question did they tell you, you were a mouth breather or nose breather. I also would suggest the nose mask as suggested, but also may want to call the person who gave you the Sleep Study explain it to them, they may have suggestions. I am no Dr but I have read an article or 2

Who is your trainer? I graduated from Millis Trenton August 2015...Gotta love Bill and the Millis 500? I see you are from KY where abouts? I am in Walton Ky Exit 171 off I -75

I just finished up training at the Trenton, OH location a few weeks ago. Currently OTR with a trainer. If you go to the CDL school in Wisconsin you will graduate with your CDL in hand as the instructor(From what I am told) is also the one who will be doing your DOT road test that you can take back to your home state. In Ohio you have to either schedule it in Wisconsin or go back to your home state to schedule it. My first trainer had a standard 10 speed truck for all of 8 hours into my OTR training with him before he had to put it into the shop. We got an automatic after that. My new trainer, due to complications with my other trainer, has an automatic as well. I have been told that if you test in Wisconsin though they will try and provide you with a standard to test out on. Don't hold me to it though. While I don't care much about whether I get an automatic or a standard, or what kind of truck it is. I must say....driving an automatic was not bad at all! I have no complaints yet. It was primarily beneficial in traffic and in the smokies. Millis is definitely one of the better companies. I won't lie though...after about a week or two of CDL school it started to get kind of monotonous but it was worth it. Most people I have spoken to there that started elsewhere wished they had found Millis sooner. If you are prior military your CDL schooling is only $1000 but they pay it back to you after you finish your contract with them. $1000 for CDL school? Thats not bad! When you factor in that your paying the $100 to reserve your seat in the class and $400 once you arrive. Thats only $500 that is going to be deducted from my check over time. My local CDL school is $4500+....So I got a heck of a deal in my opinion.
