I'd like to ask those with knowledge and experience if you could break down the life cycle of a tractor rig for me, preferably in "grunt simple" language. I'd like to get a general idea of how many miles is "too many", and what tends to break down most often. Someone was telling me today about the market being saturated with used rigs, driving down the prices, so it got me thinking about these things.
I'm not about to buy a truck, since I only just learned how to drive one. But I am curious about it from the financial side, where that line gets crossed between fancy new rig and giant boat anchor on the side of the road.
Thanks in advance.

Passed my pre-trip, backing, and road test today! It's been pretty exciting. I was about ready to poop myself the first time I drove that big rig down a busy street. Went from dreading seat time to wanting as much as I could get. Highlights of my training were lots of coffee, a full on bed bug assault my second week in my hotel room (resolved with a full can of "RAID" bug killer and a couple of hours of my room being uninhabitable), and a lot more coffee.
There were a few times I was pretty sure I wasn't going to get it. Either screwing up my backing or my down shifting, but it all just seemed to come together during this last week.
Anyway, just wanted to toot my own horn! Beep, Beep!

My Appreciation For the High Road CDL Program
I just wanted to express my appreciation for this site and the High Road CDL program. I did the program before even contacting a recruiter, just to give myself the confidence that I could do this. It thoroughly paid off. I started school and already knew most of the answers just from doing the course on this site.
I really appreciate it. Starting something new like this is both exciting and scary so the leg up is definitely appreciated! Also Happy 4th of July!

I start with CRE next Monday, and am looking forward to it. Had the same concern about some of the complaints I've seen, but in the end I just felt like it was the right company to get my start with.

A good topic to jump into. Thank You Ryan P. for making an opening! I found this site while looking for info on the Trucking industry and have been using the High Road CDL training since finding it. I'm a 50 year old military vet, was just looking for a "bill paying job" and not really "feeling" anything I was looking at until I hit a job that required a CDL and started actually learning about the business (mostly through youtube blogs). The more I learned the more it was like "Holy Sh**, this would be actually awesome!" I've done a lot of skilled work in construction: electrical, HVAC (which I really liked because it was fast, in and out), a little refrigeration, some plumbing (which is pretty straight forward). I've done security work and office pogue work, both at the management level. Worked for a Union where people with less skills walked in and bought a card, then followed me around on a job making twice what I was making as an apprentice, watching me show them how to do basic tasks, and finally here I am (I've also worked as a baker and actually have a certificate in culinary arts, though I never bothered to even pick it up).
50 years old. Everything's paid for but I still need a paycheck once in a while. I was seriously not enjoying thinking about what possible job I could find that would be the least regrettable. And this crazy Universe shows me something that not only could produce serious bank for me, but be something I could actually enjoy.
Much appreciation for the site creators and maintainers.

Life Cycle of a Semi Tractor
Never mind! I caught a link to the OOIDA site where they've got modules that can help me out. Thanks anyway though!
