Life Cycle Of A Semi Tractor

I'd like to ask those with knowledge and experience if you could break down the life cycle of a tractor rig for me, preferably in "grunt simple" language. I'd like to get a general idea of how many miles is "too many", and what tends to break down most often. Someone was telling me today about the market being saturated with used rigs, driving down the prices, so it got me thinking about these things.

I'm not about to buy a truck, since I only just learned how to drive one. But I am curious about it from the financial side, where that line gets crossed between fancy new rig and giant boat anchor on the side of the road.

Thanks in advance.

Never mind! I caught a link to the OOIDA site where they've got modules that can help me out. Thanks anyway though! smile.gif

It's good that you found the OOIDA site and if you've been reading it already, you've learned that it's not really a cut and dry answer. For the most part, they're all decent vehicles that if maintained properly, should go at least half a million miles without many major issues. The drivetrain will generally last between 850,000 miles before needing major work but the real issues come from the DEF and DPF systems.

My trainer had a 2010 Cascadia with 850k miles. The turbo went constantly.. the tri pak died a couple times.. one air tank blew up....the gears were ground so much it was hard for me to shift.... and her Jakes seemed to not be as good or powerful.

I was with her front Nov to Jan and all that happened. Her drive shafts went out on her last student and she blamed the girl... I doubt it. That truck rattled so much..terrible suspension...idk if it was cause the older models had different air bags or what... and she didn't have DEF

Thanks for the responses. Every bit of info helps since all of this is new to me, and I'm also just a curiosity junkie.
