Trucking Truth Closing October 1st – What An Incredible Ride!
This is definitely unfortunate, the 11th was my 8 year anniversary at OD. I found this site months before I started there. It was a refreshing change from all the other trucking sites, which tended to he overwhelming negative for the most part. I always check the site daily like some kind of addiction lol.
I, like many others have referred people to this site. Especially for the training program, which I still used for my Hazmat renewal. It will be sad to see that be lost for future drivers.
Also im sad to see the combined knowledge from hundreds of years of driver experience from people that posted here be lost into cyberspace.
Sort of feels like the last day of high-school, people you have known for years will be going their separate ways. You may bump into them around town but it won't be the same.

My meet has me driving south east so its Jerry Reed "East Bound and Down" on repeat for 4.5 hours everyday.
From there I go to Chicago, so it's the Blues Brothers cover of "Sweet home Chicago" on repeat for 4.5 hours.
Then I have a 30 mile drive back to my yard so it is John Denvers "Take me home Country Roads" for 45 minutes.

+1 for being here mostly for the money. I do linehaul and it isn't the most exciting career, I go to the same location at the same time, every day. I see the same people in the terminal everyday, heck I even see the same people on the road a bunch.
Where else is someone with a GED going to make six figures and not have anyone breathing down their neck?
Trucking is unique in my opinion were you have so much variety in the type of work you can do. Pay unfortunately varies greatly as well, from around 25k to into the mid 100's. It's all about what you want (or don't want out of it).

You may want to consider LTL even though it is slow. If you can work a year on the dock you will be eligible to get your CDL through the dock to driver program. You'll then be eligible to chose between P&D and or linehaul. P&D is mostly days, generally 10 or less hours a day. Usually they have more of a set schedule.
With linehaul you'll be going between terminals and meet points. Generally have to work nights, and can either have a set schedule or be a "extra board" and work when ever you are needed.
It verys by company and terminal, but P&D generally makes about 80k+ and linehaul generally about 100k+.

Dire Warning On Unsafe Highways Amid Flood Of Migrant Drivers
It is not just a foreign driver problem. I see too many "good old boys" tailgating to the point they are a couple feet off the other vehicle, speeding, speeding in construction zones, weaving in and out of traffic, playing on their phones, watching a tablet, eating and driving with their knees.

Congratulations on making it a year!
I passed a Hummer truck on I- 65 and was wondering if it was you (it wasnt). But it made me think to myself Ol Davey should be coming up on his year mark there. Wonder if he is still happy with the change.
It seems like you are, im glad to hear that!

Probably the best part of the job!
Very cool!
My dad used to take me to work with him when he was a shop manager at Con-Way. I decided I'd rather drive and break them over fixing them, now I've been driving for OD going on 8 years.

Danger on the winter roads
For your first winter just focus on surviving. Just take it slow and easy, dont feel pressured to run if you do not feel comfortable. Check the weather often and stay upto date on it. If there is a call for ice or freezing rain, dont risk it at all.
That's a nice fish by the way Jay.
