Opportunity With Owner Operator

I'm a newbie so looking for some wisdom. Having an opportunity to team with an owner operator, getting paid 15 percent of the loads is that a good deal? I'm not sure, so hopefully it's not a foolish question, I just don't know

Driving loaded with permit only

Does anyone know if you have a CDL permit driving with a licensed CDL driver, if you can drive the truck loaded or not. It's been told to me that you can not with just a permit

Flatbed vs van

Does anyone know if backing a flatbed is a lot different than backing a van trailer? I heard it was, but I'm really not sure.

Why I am becoming a truck driver later in life

Ray, I do t know how old you are, but I like you left a really great paying job, moved to another state in hopes of helping my son get into a better place (left Cali) came to Oklahoma. Due to being a little over 55 your put out to pasture in the job world, so I started driving a school bus, I decided I wanted to be as far away as I could from minute to minute screaming kids. This is something I've always wanted to do, but circumstances didn't allow it. So now I'm taking a shot, now that I'm older. I'm still in school but you CAN do this and I'm sure will enjoy it!! Keep it going no matter what!!!

CDL TESTING

That was good advice! I didn't really wanna do that for the same reasons u stated. I can tell u how to get the job done on the outside but I get inside and it's a new game. Having only 1 turn per day really puts a damper on things and now apparently the instructors have given up on me, so they no longer tell me what I'm doing wrong. They ignore me and wait til I'm so frustrated that I get out as I know others want their 1 turn as well. They too paid what I did. Regardless if this is a dog eat dog job, it seems the right thing to do, so everyone gets that 1 chance to practice!!

CDL TESTING

I am scheduled to test on Tuesday and although the school KNOWS I cant pass the pad maneuvers they are forcing me to go. I apparently have become confused. I was told by another classmate that if I cant get the parallels or ally dock that I could do my 2 pull ups and 2 get outs, when it came time for those and blow the horn, knowing I couldnt get them. Depending on passing both straight back and offset without any points, I would still pass the pad test. Does anyone know if thats the truth or is it considered auto fail, when I'm pretty sure I wouldn't pass to begin with. Not being on the negative side, but I just can't learn from watching those before me, when I watch for 20-30 mins of a mess. Unfortunately I have been there too long and they want me out, as I believe they have overbooked and the one chance a day we get just doesnt seem to be enough. Any opinions?

Need help with backing

Thank you Susan! They did have a taped middle cone for a short while then stated they took it away calling it a crutch, I don't get that but what can I say? It's so hot out there I drink a lot of water, maybe I'll stick an empty bottle in the middle, at least I should be able to identify it as the cone with a foreign object...hopefully

Thank you so much! Your right that middle cone is a stinker and for some reason, I'm realizing that I don't seem to be looking in the right mirror

Need help with backing

I'm in Tulsa, OK...I keep hearing from others that 1 or 2 attempts per day is not enough, unfortunately there are so many at the school that's all I get, yet I'm reminded of my hours invested. Yes I have the hours, I just don't have the proper truck time. There are cones set up for straight back, parallel and offset in 1 small area, facing the offset I clearly see what I have to do, when I get my turn and look at it through the mirrors, all I see is a sea of cones and loose my middle cone for offset. I'm practicing I. My head daily and try to apply what I know but fail. I really do think I could get it if I had more opportunity to try. I will try the inch by inch and see if that helps. One of my classmates who had some experience because his dad was in the industry so long kept insisting that the trailer was "dogwalking" I'm not really sure what that is, but he said it often. I'll try again and use some of the info that all of u have provided. I'll try to stay as focused as I possibly can and hopefully I will get it. I might be panicking since my PTI score is at 98 and one of the instructors says I drive pretty good, at least I avoid hitting curbs. It's hard to think about not being able to test til I get those maneuvers right.

Need help with backing

Thank you Errol and Brett for your suggestions! I'm concerned now that I'm so frustrated that I've caused a mental block that prevents me from moving forward! It seems like I'm getting very anxious to get it right now that I've become over anxious. The school has to know there is a problem when they recruit more and more people with 1 instructor and at minimum 12 students. Some days there are 16 on the pad. I'm not making excuses but a lot of the guys out there have prior experience and are several years younger. I'm starting late in the game as I've finished my prior career and starting something really different that I've wanted to do for years. I can't help but think, knowing that they asked 2 students to leave because they exceeded hours and for the most part not having a clue about things or just coming on days they felt up to it, has me worried, because I too have exceeded my hours, not for lack of trying! I now just wait hourly for my walking papers, due to them attempting to thin out the crowd they created. I have it in my head but applying it fails me every time. I will take and listen well to the advice you gave me and hopefully on Monday, it will be my day!!! Thank you soooo much!

It's a private school that truthfully are not doing what their website said. I'm so frustrated because I can't get this, thank u for your response. I just don't think 1 time per 10 hr day is enough.

Need help with backing

Im currently learning to drive a truck but the offset and parallel parking have halted me from going to take my test. I get 1 or 2 tries a day to practice. Some who have come after me have already gone and I'm not sure what the problem could be. Many of those who left did have experience working in trailer yards, oil fields and moving big machinery. I have waited so long to have the opportunity to do this and I'm at a loss. Are there any suggestions for me?
