Theres alot of cooking you CAN do in the truck.....but it entails having the room to store your supplies (like a fridge), or stopping alot to go to the store. What helped be alot was the Subway sandwich shops that are now going into truck stops...atleast it lets you pick your own stuff....great for me, cuz I won't eat iceberg lettuce....I hauled it alot....after seeing what I saw...I won't eat it. Any hoo......it will come down to keep your fresh stuff fresh....I personally can ALOT....if I can catch it, I'll stuff it in a jar. Soups, stews, gravy, meat, fish, sweet breads, corned beef and cabbage....etc. That might be something worth learning !!!

Another Lady Trucker Just Getting Started

My dad was a mechanic...and I was his only son ( I have 2 brothers, but neither of them wanted to get greasy). The easiest way to understand air brakes is that they work EXACTLY BACKWARDS from regular brakes. regular brakes, you step on to put the pressure on the brake pad to slow the vehicle. Air brakes, your step on to TAKE THE AIR AWAY that is holding the brake pad away from the brake drum....the air keeps your brakes from working...when you push the pedal, the air is released, letting the brake pad engage the drum....

Getting sick on the road....It happens, and it will happen to you. So lets set out some helpful hints..

I have been sick out on the road...I have ended up in the hospital out on the road....neither is good...but I'll tell you truthfully...as sick as I was...and I nearly died....I prefer the hospital. Why ? easy answer...theres a bed that doesn't move, they bring you food, and the toilet is a sprint away.AND that shower for all those fever sweats...So since we all won't end up in the hospital with 24 hour care, lets put up some things that will make your sick time in the truck better...and shorter... I ALWAYS carry Mucinex DM.....Its cleared for driver use as it does not cause drowsiness. This is the decongestant.. not the nighttime stuff ( you can't have that in the truck), and not the liquid ( you can't have that either). But I know it works...and theres nothing worse than being away from home...sick...stuffy head...and you are changing elevations...your head feels like its gonna explode !! For those that don't know the difference...there are antihistamines, like Afrin that is advertised...those dry out your sinuses well....but they also leave the virus/bacteria/infection in there...to sneak back up on you !!! Mucinex tells your body to send fluids to your nose and lungs....Are you going to blow your nose 50 times a day ?? yup...Are you going to cough up stuff until you think your losing a lung ?? yup...But thats how your body get rid of stuff in your airway passages...it WASHES them out...so triple your fluid intake...your body needs it to flush, and hydrate when the fever hits. Fluids are the most important part of fighting off a bug. Will you need to pee 200 times a day ?? yup...but thats another way your body gets rid of invaders...If your urine isn't pretty clear by 10am...you are not drinking enough WATER...not coffee...not soda...not juice...not power aide...WATER........ OK ladies.....lets see what else you come up with in your "on the road and I'm sick" bag of tricks. And trust me, you haven't been sick until you have gotten botulism. But it is life threatening...and just so you know, I got it a a buffet, at a Texaco truck stop...

Jolie... from Mikki

I won't sugar coat trucking...it is, and always has been a man dominated job area...BUT....there is a light at the end of the tunnel !!! Companies are now seeing that WOMEN make great drivers !!! They take care of the equipment, they make their appointments, they are polite to shippers and receivers,...and they don't park the truck infront of a ***** bar....a nail salon, maybe....but never a strip club !!! Its still hard to get out there, and demand the respect that is GIVEN to the men....but I have always worked with the guys...so I just bow my neck, let my green eyes snap, and let my redhaired temper flare...they cut me a wide swath...We have to be tougher, smarter, work harder, and be better...but in all of it...we can BE PROUD. I have a dear friend who broke into trucking in the early 60's...when women did not drive truck...I started in the early 70's and it was realitively unheard of....SO we have come a long way ladies !!!!! Walk like you own the parking lot, Speak like you are college educated, and NEVER LET 'EM SEE YA SWEAT.......
