Just want to say Thank You :)

Hi, Elizabeth here just retired last year from 23 years in Law Enforcement and now following in my father's foot steps in starting a new career at the age of 58 as an OTR driver. The best memories I had in my life was the times I shared over the road as a little girl riding with her daddy in his rig over the road. I have his blood and it is in my blood. So I completed my CDL school at Valdosta Tech College in Valdosta, Ga. Thank god I was blessed with grants to pay for every dime of the cost for the school course. I had 5 of the best retired OTR career drivers whom were retired and worked with the school to take all of us over the road driving every day. Absolutely. The best trainers!! Now I have decided to drive for Roehl to start out. I plan to be an asset to their company and give them my all as an employee as I did every day that I reported for duty in my last career. I want to say thank god for the truckingtruth site. I have learned so much knowledge reading all of your articles. And responses to other drivers questions. I already knew a lot of what to look for but your site helped a lot more when it comes to insight. So all of the drivers who participate in the knowledge of this site - Many Thanks To All Of You!!!!!!. I will keep in touch with the site to learn more and help anyone else that I can with knowledge. Thanks, Elizabeth

Western express

I want to let all the ladies that after retiring from 23 years in law enforcement at age 58 and blessed with surviving a cerebral brain hemmorage 3 years ago, I had to learn to walk and talk and have alot of prayers, will, and determination to walk myself back into my job and finish the last 1 1/2 year that I had to finish for my retirement. I DID IT!!!!! And I'm starting a whole new career as an OTR trucker. Went to school at the technical college and my grants paid for every penny of the costs, books and all. When I had my hemmorage and knew I needed to change careers I took 2 years to research several companies. You have research every bit of what each company offers their drivers both in benefits, pay, hometime, extra pay for different things, their trucks idle time limits, what the truck is equipped with to make your life on the road more comfortable like APU's, heater and ac controls in your bunk area, if they allow to put refrigerators and microwaves and tvs in your trucks and inverters to supply power for them. Do your research and do it good. I decided to start driving for Roehl. Yes ladies I'am scared starting a new career at my age. My dad was an OTR trucking and we made alot of great memories together when I was a little girl riding with him. It's in my blood and I'm going to be the best driver and employee for Roehl trucking company as I can. Anyone starting out making a decision to go into trucking I will be glad to answer any questions. Good Luck to all ladies, Be Safe and Be Blessed.

Is age a factor?

double-quotes-start.png

I am a 50 year old woman looking for a career change. Would employment be a problem at my age? Also, are there company sponsored programs in Minnesota, preferably the Twin Cities area? Do you get paid while training? I would need to have some sort of income. Jan

Hi Jan, I'm 58 years old, Grandmother to 9 wonderful grandchildren and blessed with two daughters. I retired last August from 25 year career in Law Enforcement , started CDL school at Technical College here in Valdosta, Ga. , Jan alot of Technical colleges offer the CDL course and they have several grants to apply for that pay for every penny of the class. Do your research first if there are any tech schools near you. I take my State driving test Tuesday morning August 11, 2015. This lady worked circles around the younger students. You have to put alot into the study part of the course and do not give up if it's really what you want to do. I finally get to do something for my self instead of always putting others first. It's my new career and it's never to late. I've been researching. Trucking companies since I retired to make the best choice for me. I will be a great asset to the company that I choose but I want to choose one that will appreciate that in an employee. Good Luck :)

Hi Jan I got my CDL on August 11th, 2015, There was only 2 ladies in our class and 20 men. We lost 5 in the first 2 weeks due to positive drug testing, no care attitudes, not being on time. The two of us soared past all the men right from the start. I researched my whole plan of changing careers 2 years in advance. One thing I didn't think about was, since I have no spouse to keep my home safe while I'm on the road, I packed up and covered everything and placed it in storage for my first year. I did not want to worry about my home being broken into while I was getting my first year completed. I have 2 grown daughters and they have enough to do keeping up with the grown grand children to be bother with watching my home. I let them know that I have always put everyone else first and now it's my turn. They are giving me 100% support and are so encouraged by strength make such a career change in my life at my age. They say mom your going to meet the love of your life on the road in trucking. They're always ragging. Me about how it's time to have someone special in my life, and who knows it just may happen that way. Jan just do alot of research before you commit to trucking. Take Care and Good Luck to any lady thinking of becoming a trucker. :)
