I want to let all the ladies that after retiring from 23 years in law enforcement at age 58 and blessed with surviving a cerebral brain hemmorage 3 years ago, I had to learn to walk and talk and have alot of prayers, will, and determination to walk myself back into my job and finish the last 1 1/2 year that I had to finish for my retirement. I DID IT!!!!! And I'm starting a whole new career as an OTR trucker. Went to school at the technical college and my grants paid for every penny of the costs, books and all. When I had my hemmorage and knew I needed to change careers I took 2 years to research several companies. You have research every bit of what each company offers their drivers both in benefits, pay, hometime, extra pay for different things, their trucks idle time limits, what the truck is equipped with to make your life on the road more comfortable like APU's , heater and ac controls in your bunk area, if they allow to put refrigerators and microwaves and tvs in your trucks and inverters to supply power for them. Do your research and do it good. I decided to start driving for Roehl. Yes ladies I'am scared starting a new career at my age. My dad was an OTR trucking and we made alot of great memories together when I was a little girl riding with him. It's in my blood and I'm going to be the best driver and employee for Roehl trucking company as I can. Anyone starting out making a decision to go into trucking I will be glad to answer any questions. Good Luck to all ladies, Be Safe and Be Blessed.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

APU:

Auxiliary Power Unit

On tractor trailers, and APU is a small diesel engine that powers a heat and air conditioning unit while charging the truck's main batteries at the same time. This allows the driver to remain comfortable in the cab and have access to electric power without running the main truck engine.

Having an APU helps save money in fuel costs and saves wear and tear on the main engine, though they tend to be expensive to install and maintain. Therefore only a very small percentage of the trucks on the road today come equipped with an APU.
