Yvonne,
I think alot of people think we are a little crazy for wanting to drive a truck. I have run into alot of criticism from my side of the family about it, but none of them have ever driven for a living so I don't think they know where Im coming from or why I love it so much.
As far a schooling, it can be very expensive because alot of school want you to pay the $5,000 it costs before you graduate, but if you look around you can find a school that offer actual financing, like the one I found. I only had to put $400 down payment and then they financed the rest. My payments dont start until 60 days after my first day and then they are $167 a month. The company I went with is TMC and they tuition reimbursment up to $6,000. They are going to give me $100-200 a paycheck extra and it is up to me to pay my loan with that extra money.
Keep us updated, I know you told me in another thread that you are moving to Lexington; I will be in Barnwell, about 30 minutes away.

Ozzy, where are you moving in SC? I'm moving from Virginia to Lexington. :)
Yvonne
I'm moving June 21, I should be in Barnwell that afternoon (only about 30 min. from Lexington). We plan on moving to Lexington once we can afford a house since its right next to the lake and I have a little one.

Yeah, everything is still good to go with them. Already got uhaul reservation to move and started getting all my bills sent to my new address in SC, that way I can go straight to the DMV down there and get my license change over before I go to DeMois.

A good alternative to pepper spray or a tazer is a tire thumper. Use it to check your tires daily and if someone tries something funny with you, you can just "check" his tires.

Gus, my TMC recruiter called me Monday night, he told me that he was exstending my pre hired application until the end of June. All I have to do now is call him June 10th to confirm that I am moving to SC on June 21st and he will get my bus ticket and hotel reservation all set up. The only thing that sucks about this deal is that he will be sending me to trainning in Iowa for two weeks staring on July 1st, which means I will be missing spending my birthday on July 7th with my wife and daughter. I guess this is the beggining of some of the sacrifices that we all have to make as truck drivers.

There are local jobs, the problem you will run into is that most of the local companies want at least 6 months OTR experience. However, there are a handful of local companies that will hire you right out of school. I know some people that have managed to land a local job right out of school, but this is very rare.

The hometime is one of the main reasons I decided to go with TMC. They try to get you home every weekend, now I know this is not always going to happen, but I hope that atleast they try. I have a wife and a 5 month old, so the more I am home the better it is for my family. But I also like the money and I do not mind running hard. I am just going to find that perfect balance that works for my family between road time and home time.

I do not know how true this is, but a TMC driver came to my school on Saturday morning and told me that TMC is going to start going with 9 speed trannys and cummings motors Petes. It is hard to believe since alot of their freight is heavy, so I would think that they would stick with the 13 speed trannys and Cat motors.
