Blew a dolly tire

Why don't they just make an even 30? We're at 29.50 here. They like to tease us I guess lol.

Turn on your CB!

Steve. I'm pretty sure that's fedex ground you're referring to. Fedex freight is topped out at 65. Our road drivers are assigned tractors. You can put your own cb in of course but a lot of guys don't have one. I dont have one because I'm so low on the seniority list I don't have a run and just shuttle trailers a few miles apart. No point to get one just yet.

Tarp practices

Yea some aluminum plants don't want bungees on the coils but one or two strategically placed ones never hurt. Lord help you if you end up at Alcoa in TN. In my opinion bungees are just faster and more efficient. Thats just me. I kept mine in bundles of 20 and a few fives for tidy ups. As long as the stuff is dry and still on the trailer when you deliver then any method you choose will be fine.

Tarp practices

I'm no expert but I do have 2.5 years of experience. Only issue I could think of is the hassle of undoing all that rope when its time to unload. Maybe I'm not seeing it right. Is it all one piece of rope on each side?

Saying goodbye to Prime.

Whoa didn't see MR Prime time leaving ever. Switching from flatbed to van should be an easy adjustment for you. You may miss flatbed for a little while but when its raining cats and dogs or freezing outside you'll be glad you made the switch. Seems all us flatbedders are coming over to the dark side. The day old school comes in and announces hes pulling vans will be the last straw lol. Glad to hear you get in with one of the best carriers around. Be safe brother

Friday Short Haul - Passenger car drivers, spotted lanternfly, women drivers

Interesting. Some of our DVIR pretrip slips have a little box that mentions lantern flies. I had no idea why until now.

Flatbed Variety

Elevator parts were always some of the worst loads to deal with. Always uneven so securement and tarpring is a pain. Then you end up going to a job site somewhere and those are always fun.

Community college as a means of getting my cdl?

HI Joel, welcome aboard. Sorry for late reply but I figured I'd give you my two cents as I was in a similar situation. A few years ago when I started, I wanted to get my cdl but wasn't sure of which option to take. Like you I considered private school, company sponsored and community college. I had called a few companies to see what the deal was with contracts and all but still wasn't sure. Eventually I found a community college about 30 minutes from my house. I applied and was quickly accepted. The the biggest advantage was not having to pay a dime for my training. I applied for financial aid and received a work grant from the state to attend school. It was an 8 week course, small class size of 8 students with plenty of trucks. I feel I got really lucky and blessed to have found the school. I was able to work my full time job while attending so i could transition the change easier. The best part is, recruiters from companies I was interested in all came in to do presentations. I ended up with Maverick transportation and loved it.

I'm not saying community college is the best route, I'm just saying it's a solid option. I wouldn't recommend private school however since it seems they'd just be after your money. I didn't attend one so I can't say for sure. As a final note, company sponsored is also a great option. You'll be guaranteed a job as long as you complete your training and will likely have nicer equipment.
