Why you should post trip AND pre trip

R E P L A C E

Missing rubber aside, it doesn't even look legal minimum depth. Do you have a depth guage?

Speaking of tire issues I noticed this today after I had to unhook while being loaded, what yall think ok or replace? It's a rear axle inside drive tire btw.

It could have been worse...

Thank you, everyone.

As soon as I saw the front of the trailer lift in a way it was not supposed to, I let go of the trolley and slammed the brakes. Which caused the trailer sort of "pop" up, and over to the side. I was told that one of the other drivers kept rolling, and they had 2 runaway spools as a result. Neek, a nightmare realized, but I will be even more vigilant about things. I cannot wait to get my SSD, and then I will be be married to just that one trailer, all the time. I mentioned in another thread I prefer live loads Now I have another reason to prefer them!

Grumpy, my best guess is that my 5th wheel locking mechanism wasn't fully engaged. Doing the tug test, and then the trolley test, it must have re-opened.

Marc, see what you're missing out on? 😁

Can I get wifi on my truck?

I just looked that up. I have Verizon so it would cost $249 a month!😲 I think I'll wait. They're is some amazing tech soon to be released.

I have Verizon, too, but use the Sprint one. It doesn't matter who your phone carrier is.

Never having been in your position, I will not even attempt to arm chair quarterback this one. Next time, ask the Yard Jockey to move it for you with the Goat. Then it becomes HIS problem. Glad it resolved itself in the end. Get some sleep!

This actually happened a couple days ago. I deliver this load tomorrow🙂

I use "Unlimitedville."

I pay $150/mo for 100% unthrottled 5g internet.

As Tractor Man said, though, you can eat up that 10hr break really fast if you're not paying attention. I have developed a routine, but even then, I sometimes go to sleep later than planned. Save the bulk of your gaming for resets.

It could have been worse...

I had arrived at the shipper, for a Drop and Hook. This lot was a tight one, so I had to pull in the gate, go up a hill, then back into the trailer staging area. After I dropped my mt trailer, I located my loaded trailer of spool racks. The trailer was sitting on a pretty significant incline and had a good tilt, towards the right. The yard dog also put the trailer so far back, That the left side tires were off the ground, and the bumper resting on the rocks behind the trailer.

I did my walk around, checking the load, and getting an idea of my securement points, before hooking to the trailer. Being on on an incline like that, I took extra precautions after backing under the trailer. It still wasn't enough.

I checked that the apron was flat on the 5th wheel on all sides, I checked that it was locked around the kingpin. I got in, did a tug test, and then even checked the kingpin again, and all looked good. I plugged in, raised the landing gear, and got back into the truck, and fed air to the lines, and spotted where I was going to pull the trailer to secure the load. I put it in 1st gear, let off the clutch, and pulled forward, and hit the trolley bar, like I usually do, to feel the trailer brakes. And then It happened.

0073294001560819688.jpg0386574001560819728.jpg I was looking in the mirror as I pulled the trolley, and I think I swallowed my stomach several times, as it all happened in slow motion.

Somehow the kingpin wasn't fully locked in, and came out of the 5th Wheel, and slid off, downhill, and resting against the trailer next to it (one of ours, thank goodness.) I got out, disconnected the lines, checked for noticeable damage, and called Safety, as I went to inform the shipper of the incident. I ran through the entire scenario with safety, sent in all applicable pictures, and waited for the shipper to help me out, which the did with surprising quickness. I eventually got the load secured, and pulled up the road a mile, and finally logged off duty after an almost 16hr day.

It could have been FAR Worse than it was. The best part, is that since there was no actual damage to anything, safety told me that "it never happened" and to drive safe.

One of the workers admitted that I was not the first driver this has happened to, with a trailer in that spot. I told him, that it doesn't matter, it happened to me, and I should have been able to prevent it. He just looked at me, and said, "sometimes 'stuff' happens, no matter how well you prepare."

Flatbed weight distribution

Here is a picture of my recent coil again...

You can see that it is centered just ahead of the turn signal. Here is my scale ticket from that coil. The actual weight of the coil was 41,329 lbs. ( I said 42k in my other post)

The thing about centering certain loads, is that a few inches forward, or backwards, can make a giant difference in load balance, especially with coils. (I know you know this, but it's also for the newer and potential skateboarders.)

Are Drop And Hooks Really Any Better Than Live Loads? - article by Rainy

Great article.

When I pulled boxes, I lived D&H

Now, I totally prefer live load /unload, because that way, I know the load is secured the way I like it.

Flatbed weight distribution

Typically, the center of a 53' spread axle trailer, is 14 stake pockets, then the middle spool after the 14th pocket, (or 14.5 stake pockets) . Which is normally directly in front of the turn signal light.

Flatbed weight distribution

I always load my trailer from the center point that's marked. Let's say I have a load of bricks. 25 packs. I would have 12 packs front of center and 13 packs rear of center. When I do this I'm always like 37k on split trailer axle, 27k on drives and ALWAYS maxed out on steers. What should I do differently??? It would seem counter intuitive to move the load forward on the trailer because then my steers would be over correct?

I always try to get the load as closely centered as possible, so in your example it would be 12.5 front and rear of center. I also have my 5th wheel adjusted all the way to the rear. This helps with my steer axle being well within limits. We have adjustable trailer axles, so, if possible I center everything so I can drive with my axles closed. This is not always possible, but I am able to do it, more often than not.
