Bid time (local jobs)

Did my yearly bid again last week, no more extra board. I took my old run back which is a meet , the guy who took it from me couldn't take the daytime traffic anymore. I shouldn't be called off as this runs everyday, at worst they just cancel the meet and send me to Indy.

It's at least 554 miles everyday, could be 581 if I go through Chicago.

How was your 2023?

2023 was actually better

I'm glad to hear that!

How did you guys do?

I made about 8k less than last year in mileage pay, but had more hourly and took more vacation days.

Ended up making about 5k less than last year, which while disappointing isn't nearly as bad as I expected. Spring was rough ( I was over 10k less YTD at one point) but luckily it got better when they said it would.

Yellow Residue

I do not think OD bought any terminals from what I heard. Supposedly, some of their old equipment is starting to show up in some of our yards. I just haven't seen any of it yet.

As for their drivers they have had a hard time finding work, a lot of companies will not hire them due to them being former union employees. Plus LTL is still slow so most not a lot of hiring to go around anyway. Even some OTR companies didn't want to hire them from what I've seen.

Rookie year Recap

Congratulations! Time sure does fly

Sounds like you had a pretty good first year, in my second month I forgot to roll down the legs on a trailer and then pulled out from under it. 2 days later I was so worried about the legs I cranked those down first and forgot to undo airlines. I saw them hanging off the front of the rear trailer when I turned around.

Remain vigilant in your second year, a lot of drivers make it through year one, then get lax and end up having a accident in year two.

I've never seen that before, had one or two trailers the ram didn't move on.

Good catch!

I have horrible luck with airlines on dollies, so I feel your pain there.

What do you find the most annoying?

Do you guys flash your lights to let another driver know they're good to come back over?

I do flash. Usually depends on the situation though. I use the switch to flash the headlights I won't flash the highbeams.

How much time you got? Lol

Cars or trucks that do not know how to merge.

People that pass you then slow down for no reason

People who speed up and slow down for no reason.

People who pass who then immediately cut you off to get off.

Cars that are scared to pass you, they just ride along side then slow down when I slow down.

That's it for now

When is it time to give up?

It may not be upto you at this point, that is a lot of accidents in a very short time. I think you need to reevaluate how you handle yourself on the road, it looks like you haven't learned from any mistakes.

You probably won't be hireable with any other company, so I would do anything and everything you can to keep your job.
