I failed a U.A. :(

I failed a ua and went to the assessment and was recommended SOP. I wasn't reliant on my cdl so I haven't attended the class. Is there a time limit in which that has to be done? And is there an amount of time that can pass where its possible after complete loss of cdl to get it back by re-testing without the recommended classes?

Maybe I am reading it wrong, but you don't seem to be taking the CDL seriously, the Las portion of your thread is going to make a lot of people think your lazy and not truly committed. I think before anything else you need to do so some serious soul searching about if this trucking thing is something you truly want to do

Carriers, drivers look at ways to deal with California's AB-5

Okay I am no legal expert, but this AB-5 law in my book has little to do with protecting employees and insuring their rights and more about the $8 billion California is losing in taxes. I am still reading up on AB-5 , but considering we are talking about a state with serious financial issues, they are looking for a way to collect every penny they can.

Living in your rig?

Debating whether I want to have a sandwich, cereal or walk into the terminal and microwave something? Cereal and sandwich I can prepare and eat on the truck, I can also warm up something but that means dragging stuff out to get to the hot lunch box appliance. I have been deciding what I want to do for the last several hours???

Crosswinds!!!

Holly cow! Sitting in the truck just now at the terminal, gust of wind hit the truck and rocked it hard, worst yet I felt the wind inside the truck, thinking I need to invest in some throw pillows for insolation.

How can a stop light also function while "running"?

Okay I am confused, are all the lights working properly? If you're electrical connector is plugged in and working properly, when you press on the break peddle your tail break lights should light up. If they don't , the problem could be a break light is out or there is some other malfunction. Hopefully Kearsey whom seems to be one of the most knowledgeable people here and no doubt has PhD in electrical engineering will be able to to answer your question better than me

Putting it all out there..

John B. I don't want to rain on your parade but have you gotten tested for Parkinson's? My mom recently passed from complications related to the disease. She went in for a D.O.T physical many years ago and the doctor (whom they had gone to years) noticed her hand shaking and while speaking with her it was like the left side of her face lost all muscle control. She spent the next several weeks under going MRI'S, CAT Scan, seeing various neurologist. In the end she was medically disqualified from driving a truck. Towards the end she couldn't drive a car. In your case it could be you tweak a nerve or muscle

What's the most exciting thing you've ever seen or done as a driver on the road?

The Majestic beauty of this country. I have seen some incredible and breath taking scenes, the snow covered plains of Wyoming, a red painted sunset in New Mexico, Los Angeles and New York City lit up at night, hands down the most incredible second thing I have seen on the road is the scenery, first and foremost is my wife and daughter. The most exciting part of my job is coming home and having my six year old jump in my arms, I want to freeze time in that moment.

Rare or hard to find restaurants near truck stops.

I grew up on God Father's pizza , then at some point, they all but disappear. Then in the late 1990's several pop up in Las Vegas. By the early 2000's they were gone. I think it was around 2010-2011 I discovered one last one at the loves Travel Center on I-15/us 93. Perkins okay I grew up with the notion Perkins only existed to serve the blue bird special to our senior citizens. Discovered they had one in bullhead City. In recent years we have had both white Castle and Chick Fil A come to Las Vegas. I think it was early this year Chick Fil A open it's 5th location and white castles it's second. When Chick Fil A open it's first door everyone thought the local L.G.B.T.Q community would run them out of town. a local news group interview people about the issue and people did complain Chick Fil A was homophobic evil world empire awhile chowing down on some Chick filet I guess even heathens need their Chicken and a pickle

Trapped in California

Okay so around 4am the road side mechanic shows up. First thing I told him about was the coolant leak, after about ten minutes of looking over stuff, he tells me, your water pump needs to be replaced. So we move on to the 5th wheel. I explained that I can't get the locking jaw to open , I gave a brief run down about my recent problems with it, hoping maybe he has a trick or something he can teach me. He gets down and makes several attempts to pull it, nothing happened. So he spent a few minutes inspecting it, and then has me pull on it, he gets down on the ground and looks at from underneath. For several minutes he has me pull and release, the release arm. He finally stood up and goes you said you had already been two maintenance shops to have it looked at? I said yes the last time was Thursday. And they let you take it? Yep. What did they tell you was wrong? Debris. It's not , you have a bad release arm. It's loose, it's catching on stuff. Guess what? That is exactly the same thing I told the second shop. The road side mechanic goes on to tell me that my whole 5th wheel needs to be power wash, and then rebuilt, he said it was in bad shape. So he gets an idea about getting it uncouple he has me pull on it while he did something with the release arm, he comes over and pulls on the release arm and we hear the locking jaw open.. So he tells me he is going to call to have the truck towed. So he leaves and I wait for a tow truck. Around 7:30 am my phone rings, it's some guy from the 24 hour maintenance hot line. He asked if I made it to the terminal? I said no, he asks me why not, feeling lazy (lol) I said I was told to it was going to be to be towed.. I hear him mutter something and he goes hold before I go and waste $200 or $300 on towing you let's see if we can figure something else out. He tells me add water to the coolant tank that should get me back to the terminal, Then he goes I see that the mechanic who came out made a note of a faulty release arm and said the ,5th wheel needs to be rebuilt. We need our people to look at it and actually decide what needs to be done, We really can't go by the opinion of some road side mechanic. Then in a very patronizing voice he goes on to tell me something about the locking jaw and how they are designed so in case of a malfunction the locking jaw won't open releasing the trailer It's probably debris which is causing the problem I go did you just say it's probably just debris? He goes yes, minor issue While he is going on I am thinking honey and vinegar, honey and vinegar Finally I had enough, after all the maintenance issues, being down and I think I must have been running a fever or something, because I was freezing had my jacket on, while other people I could see wearing just t shirt, any how I was thinking that whole honey and vinegar thing and Then hot sauce It's not bleeping debris, the mother bleeping release arm is bleeping loose as for the company mechanics you seem to hold in such high regard, two different bleeping crews couldn't figure out the release arm is bad Oh by the way locking jaws are a mechanical object which have been known to malfunction and drop the trailer, I had it happen to me at a shippers I could hear him stuttering and I went sir I am extremely sorry I know you are not responsible, I have been dealing with various issues with the truck for several weeks. I know you are busy and doing the best you can. I really felt bad He assured me that this time the mechanics would take care of it.

Now as far as as who I drive for I am going to give you a riddle "the color red and king Arthur and blank of the round table Until next time

Wishy Washy

Plenty of trucking companies out there I am sure would be willing to give you a chance. As for driving and backing, at CRST they told us they were only teaching us the basics to get us to earn our CDL. experience they said would came in time. Best of luck

Trapped in California

Down and out again due to the 5th wheel But wait it gets better. My AWL warning light keep coming on and then going off, all day long. Then it decided to stay on. I call maintenance and a DM, I was told it will clear eventually and we will arrange for the truck be service. So I am at a shippers dealing with these issues when I started up the truck and I hear this warning sound, I am checking the air pressure, I am looking at the gauges, the digital display ( which is blank, it's never blank) I turned the truck off, and waited for five minutes, went and try to get the 5th wheel to release, nope Turn the truck on and again it's a loud screeching warning sound. The digital display screen starts flashing multiple icons, and warnings including an engine warning and a low coolant warning. I checked the coolant this morning it was perfect, I get and notice a trailer of liquid coming out from underneath the truck, I opened the hood and I am nearly bone dry! I am was like wtf-2.gif I drove for a total of 3.5 hours today the rest of the time I sat waiting on information on an empty, for nearly two hours I have been calling various people about the current issues, I am currently waiting on a few phone calls

Living in your rig?

Last night I went to Walmart, I decided to finally get a second set of bedding, originally I just grabbed a full size fitted sheet, and one pillow case or two pillow cases, also grab another pillow. Think the total cost was going to run me $25 not bad. But then I was going by the clearance section and found a discounted set including fitted, top and two pillow cases for $6. Major upgrade from what I was using, of course my sleeping area falls far short of Kearsey's five star sleeper

Okay so first it was trailer issues, then 5th wheel issues and than more 5th wheel issuesembarrassed.gifrofl-1.gif Than it was the issue with the driver side window motor. Now I am back to having trailer problem. My problem is there are no trailers available. I have been bouncing around southern California since 11am. Sure Bob tailing is fun, even stopped for lunch from one of those food trucks. Now I am sitting at a business waiting for a possible trailer to be unloaded. I was told maybe between 6 and 7, then the warehouse guy goes maybe later, much later, maybe not unload tonight rofl-3.gif

What did you do before becoming a truck driver?

I did casino surveillance, long stretches of absolutely mind numbing boredom, follow by short burst of pure Insanity. Develope severe migraines as a result of the monitors. The wife was the one who suggested truck driving

Trapped in California

My truck is back in the shop for another 5th wheel issue and a bad motor for the driver side window. So yesterday I was supposed to deliver a load but because of delays at the shipper and later at D.O.T weigh station, and not having enough drive time, the load got reschedule for today. However I was assign to a load going to Utah. Unfortunately when I went to uncouple the 5th wheel locking jaw wouldn't open. I was told that debris had gotten stuck in the locking jaw area. Now the window motor issue. At the last shop when I was there I told them about the issue several times. I finally got the clearance to roll. I asked about the window and basically got blown off, I asked a second time in very direct forward manner, and was told the window motor hadn't been replaced . I was told it would be day or two if I wanted to wait I had been sitting long enough and wanted to get rolling. The window was still working raising it was extremely slow Well yesterday one of the mechanics lower it and it wouldn't go up. So I am currently waiting for that repair

You never know who you're going to meet

Okay now if you are at a truck stop or rest area, doing a 10 hour break or 34 hour reset and it's after 7pm then by all means go ahead and dress down, throw on your pj's or shorts wear your flip flops. Another exception to the rule is you roll up to a terminal and you are completely out of clothes but your sleep gear or shorts etc.

You never know who you're going to meet

When I was going through training with CRST, on almost a daily basis , they sent students back to the hotel for not having on appropriate clothing. They tell you the first day, flip flops, sandals, slip on's etc are not allowed. They also make it clear revealing clothes short shorts are not allowed Shirts that are sexualized, racist or can be construed as offensive were not allowed. The instructors explained that once they started driving going to shippers and consignees they representatives of CRST. It comes down to respect for the company, your fellow drivers and yourself

No loads

I did two loads today. First load was a short run, under a hundred miles, went well, no problem. Second load was at a shippers maybe 7 miles away. So I finish with the first load and get to the second shipper. Check in with security, fill out some paperwork, get my dock assignment, easy straight back into the dock. I go to the shipping and receiving office I am told that I need to move to another dock, no problem. I go back to my truck pull out of the dock move down to the new assign dock. I am line up to back in My cellphone rings It's the shipper, I put the truck in neutral and set the breaks. I am told I am going to door 12. I get out and look (G.O.A.L) I don't see dock 12. I am told where it's at. I walk down to check the area out, it's a bit but I think I can do it. So I head back to the truck. I have to wait for another truck to move. So I moved to a parking area. I was supposed to loaded at 12 pm it's now 12:45pm ( hey that's life) 12:50-1:00p phone rings it's the shipper again, don't go to dock 12 Click I am like wtf.gif So I am waiting. Finally around 1;15 I am told to go to dock.13 I go ask security where dock 13. They point it out and say good luck I look and see I am going to be pulling into a parking lot with cars. So after a shower detour I make it to the dock area. After a strange 90 degree blind back follow by a pull up, another blind side back, and a bunch of back and forth I get in the hole. Managed to avoid hitting cars. So by the time I get loaded it's going on 2:30. I am was supposed to deliver at 4m this morning. But traffic, a delay at D.O.T and weigh station, has a throwing a monkey wrench in that plan. So my day ended with me having to choose keep going and get closer to the consignee and keep my fingers crossed I can find parking. I checked with the consignee no overnight parking and no available parking in the surrounding areas. I know if I keep rolling (I had three hours left) by the time I shut down it's going to be close to 9 or 10. A ten hour rest break will allow me to drive again around 7 or 8 am. Which means I am looking at being 3-4 hours late. I also consider the grid lock rush hour traffic. So I ended up grabbing a parking spot at a rest area. Spoke with the DM inform him of the situation. Now I am going back to sleep.
